The threat of thunderstorms couldn’t stop an exciting night of old-fashioned heat and feature races Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL.

Instead, it was Ricky Brooks who brought the thunder and lightning, scoring a victory in the action-packed 40-lap Midwest Cooling Tower Pro-Late Model main event.

The 43-year-old Brooks passed Bryce Dulabhan with 22 laps remaining, and then pulled away to win the second race of the 2012 Pro Late Model season.

“We had a great time,” Brooks said. “We used a set of used tires in the heat and saved everything for the feature. Bryce (Dulabhan) raced me very clean and I appreciate that. He’s going to be a real threat this year. “

Dulabhan finished in second in his second Late Model of his career with Josh Bragg, Michael Pitts and Eric Courville rounding-out the top-five.

John Thompson started the feature in third and delivered a scare when he spun in front of the entire field on lap two. Bragg, Courville, and David Jones each took evasive action and no other car was involved.  Thompson suffered a mechanical failure and finished in eighth.

Pro Late Models Heat Races

Josh Bragg captured his first Late Model victory in seven years, holding off Ricky Brooks to win heat race no. 1 Saturday night at Alabama’s Fastest Half-Mile. It was a special moment for Bragg, who was met by his Bragg Racing Group in victory lane for a special celebration.

Bragg took the lead on lap 2, on the backstretch, when Eric Courville drifted into the dirt and lost his momentum and the lead. Bragg would lead the rest of the way.

“It’s been seven years since I’ve seen a victory lane and it pretty much looked like the boss forgot how to drive,” Bragg said.

Elliott Massey led wire-to-wire to win heat no. 2 against Michael Pitts, David Jones and John Thompson. Thomas “The Moose” Praytor, fresh off testing an ARCA Series car at Talladega served as Massey’s spotter, a fact not lost on the driver.

“I had a heck of a spotter and he got me out of trouble a few times,” Massey said.

Island Motor II Bombers

Jayme Corry won his third feature race of the season and delivered Day Racing its sixth-consecutive win in 2012 Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway. The win is the fourth of Corry’s bombers career.

Corry started on the outside pole and quickly overtook polesitter Rusty Powell Sr. Brandon Tipton started third and followed his Day Racing teammate around Powell and into second place, all in the race’s first two laps.

Corry would lead the rest of the way to win his first feature since Mar. 17.

“I had to fight the car all night,” Corry said. “So I’m a little surprised to be here.”

While Corry was leading, he wasn’t setting particularly fast lap times. This allowed Tipton and Ralph Rogers to creep up on his rearview and challenge for the top spot. Rogers turned Tipton in turn 4 to bring out the first caution on lap 8. Tipton would not be able to continue and finished the race in 12th.

Rodgers was unable to match Corry’s pace on the restart and was forced to accept a runner-up position. Powell Sr., William Leytham and T.J. Thompson rounded-out the top-5.

Rusty Powell Sr. and TJ Thompson won their individual heat races.

Praytor Realty Super Stock-Trucks

Okie Mason doubled-up on Saturday, sweeping both heat and feature races in the Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks Series at Mobile International Speedway. Mason won his heat and was promised an additional $100 bonus should he repeat his success in the feature.

Not only did Mason win the feature, he dominated, leading every lap of the race in route to his first win of the season.

“All these youngins keep winning but we old guys aren’t ready to quit yet,” Mason said. “I’d like to give a huge thanks all of the fans who stuck around out in the cold.  I hope we put on a good show.”

Super Stock-Truck Heat Races

Okie Mason and Ricky Johnson won heat races in the Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Truck Series Saturday night at MIS. Mason led wire-to-wire and Johnson marched from fifth to win his preliminary.

“I really needed to step up my game,” Mason said. “It’s good to be back in victory lane and we’re going to do our best to get back here after the feature.”

Picking up where last week left off, Steve ‘Chopper’ Stagner broke the Super Stocks-Trucks track record by posting a 19.163. The previous record was a 19.164, posted by Jessie Reid on Mar. 27, 2010.

Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman

The Sportsman class reclaimed its reputation as Mobile’s most-competitive class and Chad Robinson won his third straight feature Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway.

Robinson took the lead on lap 8, passing Michael Moody on the outside of turn 4, and withstood a torrid late-race charge from Brannon Fowler.

“It wasn’t easy tonight,” Robinson said. “Everybody kept it clean and while I wanted to race Brannon clean, I wanted to make it hard for him also.”

The difficulty was turned all the way up for Fowler, who had the most dramatic night of any driver on Saturday. Fowler started the feature in tenth, made his way up to third by lap 3 and was spun out on lap 4 when Moody, Jonathan Day and Jonathan Langham went three-wide and collected Fowler.

This brought out the caution and sent Fowler from third place back to the rear of the field. Fowler would march back through the pack and would finish in second.

Moody, James Patrick and Day completed the top-five.

Sportsman Heat Races

Brannon Fowler marched from the rear of the field to win his Sportsman heat race Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway. Fowler reached the top-five by lap 2 and assumed the lead by lap 3 – he never looked back.

“It was fun coming up from the back,” Fowler said. “I just want to thank my dad and our sponsors.”
