Marty Ward is no stranger to victory lane at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, SC, but it’s been a while since he visited. But Ward knew exactly what he was doing and where he was going Saturday night, out qualifying points leader Toby Porter to sit on the pole for the main event. He used that inside spot to take the lead on the first lap.
Ward stayed right there for the entire race, as Porter stayed right behind until lapped traffic put a little distance just before lap 30.
“I like racing with Toby,” Ward said in victory lane. “My car was a little free, but evidently Toby’s car was just a little bit worse. I had to work hard tonight. I’m getting a little too old and fat for this.”
It was the first time this season, made up of four previous races, that Porter wasn’t sitting in the winner’s circle at the end of the Late-Model Stock main event.
While Ward, who has six track championships to his name, cut into Porter’s perfect points total, but the driver that had been running second in the points race did not compete Saturday night. This gives Porter a big advantage in the race for the track championship.
Anthony Anders finished third, with Ralph Carnes fourth and Trey Gibson fifth.
Nate Monteith, Taylor Stricklin, Greg Welborn, Bob Root and Raphel Valina rounded out the top ten.
In other action, Randy Ballew grabbed the lead early and won the Trucks main, with Tim Lollis second and Ryan Walker third. Chris Chastain, who won last week and had to start in the rear, moved up to fourth and Gene Burnett was fifth.
In the Charger division feature, Mike Mote went from worst to first to take the checkered flag. Since Mote won the race a week ago, he had to start at the rear, and Saturday night’s win puts him right back where he started in this race.
“I don’t know if I am getting faster or everyone else is slowing down,” Mote said in victory lane.”
James Johnson was second, and Danny Gilbert took third. Zach Pressley managed to get a fender ahead of Andy Norris coming out of the fourth turn on the last lap to nab fourth place.
It took Kyle Ballew a while to take the point in the Renegade main event, but once there, he had to work his way through two green-white-checkered flag endings. Dale Stancil was second, with Jeremy Drummond, Brandon Fox, and Colt Smith completing the top five.
Tommy Davis Jr. took the win in the four cylinder division, leading from start to finish, and David Rader was second. Robert Floyd was third, with James Madden and Sara Madden taking fourth and fifth, respectively.
David Rader won the Street Stock main, with Freddy Hale, Jr. in second and Tyler Gibson in third. Cody Hill was fourth and Furman Craft was fifth.
