Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL returns to action on Saturday night with some Old School heat and feature racing, including the Late Models.
Saturday night’s lineup will be headlined by the Midwest Cooling Towers Pro Late Models, competing in an eight lap heat race followed by a 40-lap feature. It doesn’t get anymore “Old-School” in the pro-late models than former winner David Jones, who is setting his sights on victory lane.
Jones has had a lot of success at Mobile International Speedway, and other than Bubba Pollard, Jones was the only competitor to win a 100 lap late model race at Mobile in 2011. Despite his success, Jones is continually looking to prove himself against the best, especially as the competition level grows at Alabama’s Fastest Half-Mile.
“The best in country race at Mobile and it’s a lot of fun to test yourself against these guys,” Jones said.
Jones owns the Alabama Pipe and Supply Modified driven by Donnie Hamric, who has driven the car to two victories this season, a fact not lost on his car owner. Jones is hoping to join his teammate as a feature winner as early as this Saturday night.
“I’m real proud of what Donnie’s been able to accomplish in our car this year but there’s a lot of pride at stake and we’re wanting to get our pro late model into victory lane too.”

Jones was a stout contender during the pro-late model season-opener, ultimately finishing sixth. Jones led early but was involved in an accident that kept him from competing for the win.
With that in mind, Jones believes that the key to winning Saturday’s feature starts with avoiding accidents and maintaining a healthy car. The rest, he hopes, will take care of itself.
“If we can keep our nose clean, we’ll have a real good shot at winning on Saturday,” Jones said.
That could be bad news for a star-studded lineup that will also contain Josh Bragg, Elliott Massey, John Thompson and Bryce Dulabhan. The Praytor Realty Super Stock-Trucks, Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman and the Island Motor II Bombers will open the show with heat and feature races.
