Steve “Chopper” Stagner completed a dramatic last-turn, last-lap pass to win the main event on Saturday night in the Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks division at Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL. With the win, Stagner became the first driver to win in the combined cars versus trucks series on Alabama’s Fastest Half-Mile.

Stagner took advantage of Okie Mason’s mechanical failure on the final turn to pick up his first win of the season.

“I thought you were doubling the purse,” Stagner joked to series sponsor Tommy Praytor as the first Truck driver in victory lane.

Stagner began the race in fifth place and patiently waited for the opportunity to strike. He moved into third by lap 19 by pushing Shannon Jackson up the track in turns 3 and 4, setting his sights on Jessie Reid and Mason.

Reid slid up the track on lap 20, presenting another opportunity for Stagner to move up. He would sit in second for the next five laps until Mason’s misfortune. The always-humble Mason was ultimately the first person in victory lane to congratulate Stagner on his victory.

Praytor Realty Super Stock-Trucks Heat Races

A truck finally took the checkered flag in the Praytor Realty Super Stock-Truck division but the winning truck couldn’t even make it to victory lane. JayJay Day won the first heat, completing a dramatic last-lap pass under Bobby Baria to mark the first heat race victory in a truck in the combined super stock-trucks class at Mobile International Speedway.

Day snuck a nose under Baria coming off of turn 4 with the pair colliding and turning Day into the frontstretch wall after completing the pass. The turn of events left the feature without two of the night’s fastest entries, and left two drivers in a remarkably sour mood.

Shannon Jackson won the other super stocks heat race with Jessie Reid capturing the pole for the night’s festivities.

Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman Feature

Chad Robinson passed Bob Bryant out of turn 4 on lap 16 of 25 and held off a hard charging Brannon Fowler on the final lap to win the Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman feature.

Robinson and runner-up Fowler had the night’s most dominating cars but had to battle from the back of the field to determine a winner.

“It really took us a while to get to the front and that was really exhausting,” Robinson said. “Everyone raced clean, gave each other room, and we gave it everything we had.”

Mark Barnhill began the feature on the pole but was quickly disposed of by Bryant in turn two on lap two and fell to the back of the pack.

Bryant had built a straightaway lead by lap four when the caution came out for debris from David McDade’s injured no. 75 car. When the race resumed, it was Robinson and Fowler who systematically moved up the field, ultimately disposing of Bryant by lap 16.

“If we only had two or three more laps to work on him,” Fowler said.

Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman Heat Races

Jonathan Langham and Bob Bryant won heat races in the Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman division on Saturday night, the first heat races of the season.

Bryant and Barnhill race side-by-side for a majority of their heat race until Bryant could clear the no. 5 on lap five of six. Langham led his heat race from wire-to-wire.

Island Motors II Bombers Feature

Just one day after getting married, Brandon Tipton celebrated in splendid fashion, sweeping the night in the Island Motor II Bomber Division.

The win also marks four-consecutive wins with Day Racing with Corry picking up the first two checkered flags of the season.

“The invert was tough, the race was grueling, and we really needed the win to cap off a great weekend,” Tipton said. “I want to thank my new wife for letting me do this and a great team for building these awesome race cars.”

Tipton and Corry started in the back (15th and 16th) but reached the top five by lap five. Both drivers also made some cool moves to avoid the race’s major accident on lap one when Tommie Blocker was spun, also collecting Wesley Barnhill, Matt Jackson and Thomas Denton. The duo was right in the middle of the action and was able to avoid major damage.

Tipton took the lead on turn 4 of lap five when he waited for William Laytham to slide up the track. Laytham had been getting progressively looser as the race continued on and Corry followed his teammate once Tipton navigated around the race leader.

Island Motors II Bombers Heat Races

William Leytham and Brandon Tipton won relatively quiet Island Motor II Bomber heat races to set the tone for a competitive night of racing.

Tipton was the fastest qualifier for Saturday’s bomber action and won the second heat from the sixth position. The final laps of the race featured a battle of teammates as Brandon Tipton and Jayme Corry (Day Racing) dueled with Rusty Powell Sr. and Rusty Powell Jr.

Leytham led wire-to-wire in his heat race, taking the lead on the first turn of the first lap, from the third starting position. It was a daring move that ultimately paid off, as Leytham won the evening’s first race.

Mobile International Speedway returns to action on Saturday, April 14, for Open Wheel Only Weekend, featuring the Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series, the Alabama Pipe and Supply Modifieds, and Motorcycles.  Visit mobilespeedway.net for more info.
