Chase All You Want, Elliott Wins Miller Lite 100 At Mobile

Chase Elliott took the lead from Augie Grill on a lap 77 restart and held off Mike Garvey on a final restart with two laps to go to win the first Miller Lite Super Late Model 100 on Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL.

In front of record field of 33 Miller Lite Super Lite Models, Elliott extended his lead to a full straightaway over Garvey and seemingly had the race won until the yellow waved a final time on lap 98 for Anthony Sergi’s spin off turn 1. The caution gave Garvey one last shot but he spun his tires on the restart, allowing Elliott to scoot away. The victory was Elliott’s first in the Miller Lite Series since August 2010 and his third win overall.

“Things went real smooth and I saved the car until we needed it at the end,” Elliott said. “(Crew chief) Ricky Turner did a great job with the car. Our entire team was great and I’m so pleased to be a part of this group.”

Grill dominated the middle stages of the race, leading the most laps, 29, from lap 46 to lap 77. Grill also had the largest lead, a full straightaway over Elliott, before the caution flew on lap 77. Elliott passed Bubba Pollard for second place just a few laps prior and was beginning to pull Grill in. Grill surrendered the lead on lap 77 and ultimately finished fourth.

Pollard, the defending Series champion, had saved his equipment in preparation for a late-race run but suffered transmission problems and finished 22nd. The DNF broke a streak of six straight Super Late Model wins for the Senoia , GA native.

Jeff Choquette, the 2008 Series champion, qualified on the pole but started 10th due to a dice-roll inversion. He ran out of fuel on the final restart and crossed the line in 18th. Casey Smith was the beneficiary of the inversion, starting on pole, but also succumbed to late-race transmission problems. He finished ninth.

Ben Kennedy, the great-grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr., competed in the Miller Lite 100 and finished in third. It was his first start at Alabama’s Fastest Half-mile. Engine issues sidelined ARCA-Mobile 200 Champion Cale Gale on lap 49.

Alabama Pipe and Supply Modifieds

Donnie Hamrac struck first in the first round of the Alabama Pipe and Supply Modifieds season at Mobile International Speedway. It took just three laps for Hamrac to march from sixth place to the lead, where he led until the white flag. On the final lap Donald Crocker took the lead and in a side by side battle. The pair of former MIS Champions put on show to checkered flag with Hamrac wrestling the win from Crocker.

Bubba Pollard, who was driving a modified in addition to his late model duties, was attempting to pass Hamrac with four laps to go when he had motor issues. He quickly lost touch with Hamrac, and eventually finished ninth.

Bo McCraney and Jonathan Langtham started on the front row but each suffered problems at the start of the race, opening the door for Hamrac to lead by the third lap. McCraney finished seventh, while Langtham finished 10th.

Defending champion Gerald Wilkerson completed the podium.

Mike ‘Mad Dog’ Maddox started on the inside of row two but never had the grip to battle for the lead. He finished in sixth.

Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman

Bob Bryant and Michael Sanford crashed in turn 4, fighting for the lead, with three laps to go handing the lead – and eventual race victory to Brannon Fowler in the Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman feature Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway.

Fowler led laps earlier in the race but suffered a terrible restart on lap 13 to drop behind Patrick. When the leaders tangled, Fowler was there to take advantage and win his second-consecutive Sportsman event in the Port City.

“What a crazy race,” Fowler said. “There was a lot of contact and I even got into James [Patrick] earlier in the race, so I’m sorry about that. But that’s racing at Mobile and we’re happy to get the win.”

The race was wild from the very start as pole-sitter Mark Barnhill was slammed into the wall on the opening lap with Michael Moody. The accident also collected Kris Kahalley with all three drivers failing to turn a single lap.

This opened the door for Shanna Ard to lead the first 13 laps of the race before getting passed by Bryant on the outside of turn 1. Bryant would lead until the altercation with Sanford on lap 17.

Island Motors II Bombers

Day Racing won its third straight Island Motors II Bombers feature to start the season as Brandon Tipton broke through to win his first race of the season Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway.

Tipton started the race in sixth but took the leaders three-wide on the first restart to lead all 15 laps.  Tipton’s teammate, Jayme Corry, won the first two races of the season but just ran out of time on Saturday, finishing second.

“This car is so awesome,” Tipton said. “I just want to thank the guys and all of our sponsors. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the race.”

Mobile International Speedway will be back in action on Apr. 7 for heat and feature races for the Island Motors II Bombers, Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman and Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks. For more info, visit mobilespeedway.net.
