With a week off from the NASCAR camping World Truck series, Georgia’s Max Gresham made the trip to Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL, to compete in Pro Late Model action.
It proved to be a good trip for Gresham, who piloted his Ronnie Sanders owned entry to the feature victory in the 95-KSJ 95 Saturday night.
Two-time Track Champion DJ VanderLey set the early pace swapping the lead with another moonlighting truck competitor, Mike Garvey. Garvey and VanderLey swapped the lead back and forth until contact in the middle portion of the race sent the pair to the rear of the field.
VanderLey and Garvey quickly carved their way through the field, and again found themselves running first and second. The pair tangled again with less than 20 to go, opening the door for Gresham.
Gresham didn’t have a dominating car, but the 18-year old prodigy held off a hard charging Josh Bragg running the most-intelligent race of the night on the way to his first career victory at the high-banked, half-mile oval.
“We just stuck to our game plan, ran a very conservative race and watched as the leaders kept wrecking each other,” Gresham said. “We took advantage and found ourselves in victory lane.”
Josh Bragg finished second, with John Thompson third, Garvey fourth and Bryce Dulabham fifth.
Praytor Realty Super Stocks/Trucks
Bubba Winslow won from the pole in the Praytor Realty Super Stocks/Trucks feature on Saturday night but it wasn’t wire-to-wire.
Bobby Baria took the lead from Winslow at the start of the race and led early. When the field took the white flag Baria led Ricky Johnson by a bumper. Johnson tagged Baria in turn 1 costing Baria the win. But a rough driving penalty for Johnson cost him the win as well.
The Baria-Johnson brouhaha allowed Bubba Winslow an opportunity to take home the win followed by Jessie Reid. Chopper Stagner finished third and recorded the highest finshing truck in the first ever Truck-Super Stock race. Jay Jay Day and Todd Pitts rounded out the top five.
Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsmen
Brannon Fowler passed a pole-sitting Bubba Winslow on lap nine to win the 25-lap Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman feature on Saturday night. Winslwo would hang on to finish second, with James Patrick third, Jonathan Langham fourth, and Bob Bryant in fifth.
Milton’s Shanna Ard qualified third and quickly moved into second on lap 11 before her tires gave out. She spun on lap 16 to bring out the caution and ultimately finished in sixth.
Island Motor II Bombers
Opening night winner Jayme Corry cleared William Leytham on a lap six restart and never looked back in the Island Motor II Bombers feature. Corry started the race in fifth and methodically worked his way to the front over the first five laps of the race.
The scariest accident of the night occurred on lap eight when Rusty Powell Jr. got spun on the front stretch and experienced a head on collision with John Beasley. Beasley jammed his wrist on the collision but suffered no further injuries. Powell escaped uninjured.
For the second week in a row, Corry, Brandon Tipton and Leytham completed the podium. The win is Corry’s third-career bombers win at Mobile International Speedway.
Mobile International Speedway will be back in action Saturday night, March 24, for round one of the Miller Lite super Late Model Series. Alabama Pipe and Supply Modifieds, Island Motor II Bombers and Bob’s Speed shop Sportsman will also be in action.
