Bubba Pollard beat out the competition and the fog to score the SRL National Tour victory on Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, Alabama.
With a thick blanket of fog rolling in over the half-mile asphalt raceway on lap 73 of the 125 lap feature, race officials were forced to call the race early, giving the Senoia, Georgia speedster his second straight win in the event.
“We had to put ourselves in position,” said Pollard, who pocketed a $15,000 payday for the victory. “We had a good race car.”
After setting fast time in qualifying, Pollard gave up the leader early to Hunter Robbins, driving for Georgia Racing Hall of Famer Ronnie Sanders. Pollard dropped back to second, with Stephen Nasse and Lawrenceville, Georgia native Casey Roderick giving chase.
The first caution of the race flew on lap 5 when Trent Williams had an issue in turn 1.
Nasse went on the attack on the restart, moving past Pollard and Robbins to take the lead, with Pollard moving to second behind him. The second caution came on lap 47, and on the restart, Pollard charged to the lead around Nasse, with Jett Noland following to second. The third caution of the night came shortly thereafter, when Howard Langham spun off turn 4.
With fog beginning to encroach on the speedway, race officials made the call to shorten the event by 25 laps, planning the end for lap 100. The race would go under the yellow flag a fourth time when Elliott Massey spun in turns 3 and 4. The race resumed on lap 70, but three laps later, another caution flew when Dylan Courtney had an issue.
As the field moved around the track under caution, the fog rolled in heavily, and race officials determined conditions were unsafe to continue, and the race was ended on lap 73, with Pollard getting the victory.
It gave Pollard his third career series win, and his second consecutive at Mobile.
“I wanted to lead at the Lap 75 break too because I was saving enough,” Pollard said. “The tire lasted a long time tonight. I thought the tire held up well and could hold up.”
Nasse finished in second, with Noland in third, Roderick in fourth, and Robbins in fifth.
Cody Krucker, Dustin Smith, Michael Goddard, Chris Davidson, and Dylan Bigley rounded out the top 10.
