Jason Croft was in the right place at the right time at Georgia’s Rome Speedway on Sunday night.
Croft inherited the point when leader Austin Horton had mechanical issues, and went on to score the annual Rome Boss Super Late Model Championship race win at the ½-mile clay oval.
Horton looked to be the man beat from the start of the feature, leading most of the race with Jason Hiett challenging for the top spot through most of the race.
While under caution, Horton went to the pits, his night over with a mechanical problem. Meanwhile, Hiett had to restart in the rear of the field.
That opened the door for Croft, who drove to the win. Hiett recovered to finish in second, with Sam Seawright in third, Ahnna Parkhurst in fourth and Austin Smith in fifth.
In other action, Oliver Gentry held off a very strong Tod Hernandez to score the Steelhead Late Model feature victory. Drew Benefield followed closely in third, with Shane Smith in fourth and Mario Gresham in fifth.
Devin Stuart recorded his first ever victory at Rome Speedway, leading wire-to-wire for the Crate Late Model feature. Andy Picklesimer, T.J. Brittain, Zach Pilcher and AJ Carlisi rounded out the top five.
The 602 Sportsman feature also had a first time winner, as Rome, Georgia’s Kyle Beck led the entire distance for the victory. Colten Jackson followed in second, with Chris Hough in third, Jamie Maurice in fourth and Jesse Goss in fifth.
Eric Hamby took the win in the time shortened Economy Bomber feature. Several early cautions slowed the race, with the longest flying when the car of Tim Bennett flipped on the backstretch. Bennett climbed out of the car uninjured. Derek Young finished second, with Dylan Armstrong third, Michael Mims fourth and Brandy Brewer fifth.
After starting dead late in a 12 car field, Rick Ricks made his way to the front of the Street Stinger feature, and went on to win. Jason Young finished in second, followed by Jonathan Nelson in third, Daniel Turner in fourth and Jeff Peardon in fifth.
