After two straight weeks of rain delays, Hartwell Speedway in Hartwell, GA finally returned to action Saturday night as they played host to the inaugural Charlie Mize event.
The FASTRAK South East Tour was in the house, with hometown hero Parker Herring picking up the victory. Despite the fact he has raced in the series for several years, Saturday night’s win was the first touring event victory for the Hartwell native. He pocketed a cool $2000 for his efforts.
After qualifying on the outside pole, Herring took the lead from the drop of the green and maintained it throughout the 35 lap event.
FASTRAK weekly points leader Lee Cooper started on the outside pole, and ran in second place for a majority of the race. That came to an end when he tangled with Frankie Beard and Brandon Umberger on a restart, triggering an accident that would involve half the field. All competitors were able to finish the race.
In the end, it was Herring taking the victory, followed by David Smith, with Ty Lowe, Brandon Overton and Chad Hale rounding out the top five.
In other action, Steven Powell came across the line first to pick up the win in the Up Front division, with Joel Powell Sr. second, Ryan Goldsmith third, Freddie Duplisea fourth and Kevin Cox fifth.
Jason Calhoun picked up the first win of his career, taking the top spot in the in the Young Guns event. He topped Bryce Alewine, Daniel Ivester, Kendall Church and Mitchell Ledford.
Tyler Brown recorded his first victory of the year in the Modified Street division, with Rusty Jordan, Paul Byrum, Jack Hill and Russell Baker rounding out the top five.
Mitchell Godfrey came away with the win in the Stock Four Cylinder class, followed by Nathan Bray, Marty Hayes, Chris Wilson and Ryan Boles.
Hartwell will return to action on Saturday, June 2 with a full slate of racing action on double points night, featuring bicycle racing.
