After sitting idle for five weeks – and with its future having been in doubt – action returned to Georgia’s Hartwell Speedway on Saturday night.
Under new ownership, the 3/8-mile clay raceway reopened with renewed vigor, kicking off a planned 14 week schedule to close out the 2017 season.
And Corey Roulette got things off to a strong start, as the Cumming, Georgia wheelman dominated most of the Limited Late Model feature.
Pole sitter Ashley Poole jumped out to the early lead, with Roulette in pursuit. Roulette got a run on the inside of the leader on lap two, and then moved alongside as the duo passed the flagstand.
As they raced through turns one and two, Roulette’s car slid up the track, edging Poole’s car up into the loose dirt along the wall. As Poole fought for control, Roulette was able to sprint away to the lead.
Poole would recover quickly, and stormed back to second place in short order.
Up front, there was no catching Roulette, and he drove away to almost a half-lap advantage by the time the checkered flag flew.
Poole had to settle for second, with Mason Tucker in third, Ronald Woods in fourth and Scotty Chatham in fifth.
In other action, Danny Sanders jumped out to the early lead in the Crate Late Model feature, and went on to score the victory over Grant Jordan. Eric Veal finished in third, with Brad Moorehead in fourth and Cody Pritchett in fifth.
The lead was not the place to be in the Stock V8 feature. Shannon Duck took the lead early, and pulled out to a sizeable advantage over second place Evan Brown. It appeared that Duck was on his way to a sure win, but it all went away with a cut tire as he raced off turn two.
That moved Evan Brown to the lead. He too would build a strong lead over second place Ricky Chamberland. That advantage went away when Brown spun in turn two in front of the pack, sending everyone scrambling to miss him.
That handed the lead to Cal Moon, with Duck, who had recovered from the early flat tire, moving to second. Duck’s attempt to come back went away with a second flat tire, this time in turn three.
Over the closing laps, Evan Brown had moved back into contention, and looked several times to try to get around Moon. But in the end, it was Moon scoring the victory, with Evan Brown, Tyler Smith, Chris Brown and Paul Moore rounding out the top five.
Preston Strickland appeared to be on his way to the victory. But something broke on his mount coming to the checkered flag off turn four, allowing Thomas Segars to power by with just a few yards remaining to score the victory.
Strickland was able to coast across the finish line in second, with Johnny Pilgrim in third and Chase Burdette in fifth.
Rod Roberts held off Chad Atha to take the victory in the Hobby feature, with Joe Cash in third, Joe Yarborough in fourth and Rusty House in fifth.
Justin Reed was flagged the winner of the Up Front FWD feature, but was disqualified after failing to go through post-race tech inspection. That gave Joel Powell, Sr. the victory, with Justin Sorrow in second, Randy Shaw in third, North West in fourth and John Shaw, Jr. in fifth.
