Glen Luce of Turner, Maine claimed an emotional victory Sunday afternoon in the Mekkelsen RV 150 for PASS North Super Late Model Series at Thunder Road International Speedbowl in Barre, Vermont.
Luce, coming off a season that included a $31,000-plus win in the 42nd Annual Oxford 250 last August, took the lead from and then held off longtime ACT Tour rival Wayne Helliwell, Jr.
Helliwell chased Luce under the checkered flag, earning his runner-up finish the hard way after starting dead last on the field. Travis Benjamin nailed down a third-place finish.
Benjamin led about 100 laps to open up the race, yielding the top spot to Jeremy Davis at that point.
For 20 laps Davis looked unstoppable, but under caution something went wrong under the hood of his car, ending his day.
That handed the lead to Helliwell, who had methodically worked his way into contention.
On the ensuing restart, Helliwell appeared to spin his tires, and Glen Luce took command. Luce did not relinquish the top spot for the remainder of the event, earning his first touring series win of the 2016 season.
Luce, Helliwell and Benjamin were joined in the top five by fourth place Derek Ramstrom and Ben Rowe in fifth.
Derek Griffith, Johnny Clark, D.J. Shaw, Mike Rowe and Scott Payea rounded out the top ten.
The next PASS North Super Late Model event is the Foley Oil 150, scheduled for Saturday, June 11 at White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock, New Hampshire.
