Entering Saturday night’s Pro Late Model doubleheader at Mobile International Speedway, the division standings were extremely close and included a three-way tie for third.

By virtue of winning the season-opening 100-lap race for the division, Wayne Niedecken, Jr. carried a scant eight-point lead into the race, but needed a strong performance to take firm control of the standings.

He got it, as he swept both features at the Irvington, AL raceway.

Starting from the pole position for the first 20-lap feature, Niedecken wasted no time, as he powered to the lead at the drop of the green flag. With no cautions to halt his torrid pace, he opened up a straightaway lead, and went on to beat defending division champion Josh Bragg in dominant fashion.

By virtue of winning, the 58-year-old would have to start at the rear of the field for the 30 lap second leg of the doubleheader.

At the drop of the green flag, polesitter Tony Grisaffi quickly moved to the race lead while Niedecken worked his way up to fifth by lap three.

Shortly after Ronnie Osmer assumed the lead from Grisaffi, the first caution flag of the race waved on lap four following contact between Elliott Massey and Rick Crawford in turn 2 that sent both cars spinning.

On the following restart, Niedecken made quick work of Bragg and moved to the third position—setting his sights on Dustin Smith for second. Twelve laps later, he moved to second.

Riding in the tire tracks of Osmer, Niedecken took the race lead on lap 16. With a clear track ahead of him, Niedecken opened up a sizeable gap and cruised to the victory.

“The car was a little free in the second feature.” Niedecken said. “It was good though. I was able to cut the car in the corner and that’s what you’ve got to do here in Mobile.”

By virtue of winning both races on Saturday night, the veteran driver took firm control in the division point standings and now has a 35-point lead over Smith, with Bragg in third trailing by 48.

Pro Trucks

Starting third and fourth after the first two rows were inverted following a pre-feature dice roll, a father and son duel between Steven and Mark Davis appeared to be in the cards for Saturday night’s 25-lap Pro Truck feature at Mobile.

Instead fans saw a classic performance by Steven who took his competition to the wood shed.

Taking the lead from defending division champion Okie Mason on the seventh lap of the race, the Theodore, AL driver wasted no time cementing his place at the front of the field. It was a position that he wouldn’t relinquish for the remainder of the race.

With no caution flags to halt his pace, Davis scored his first win of the season.

Mason, Howard Langham, Mark Davis and Brian Weimer rounded out the top five.

Sportsmen

On the heels of a triumphant victory two weeks earlier that served as his first following a scary accident during the Sportsman feature of Snowball Derby weekend in December, Lee “Red Dog” Reynolds entered Saturday night’s 25-lap feature for the Sportsmen with momentum on his side.

Starting from the pole after the pre-race dice roll, Reynolds firmly cemented his place in the lead at the drop of the green flag. Starting second, a hard-charging Jason Smith wasted no time catching Reynolds and eventually took the lead. Smith began to pull away from the rest of the pack and appeared to be on his way to another victory.

Reynolds, however, had something else in mind.

On lap 16, a caution flew when Dayton Sidner had a problems. That allowed Reynolds to cloase up on the leader, giving him a chance to steal the lead away.

With a strong run from the outside lane entering turn 1, Reynolds pulled right alongside Smith, but was unable to clear him down the backstretch. Reynolds, however, wouldn’t be denied as he tried the same maneuver again on the following lap. This time it stuck, as Reynolds emerged with the lead off turn 2.

From there, Reynolds went on to score his second consecutive win, with Connor Okrzesik in second, Smith in third, Jonathan Langham in fourth and Michael Ledlow in fifth.

Bombers

Always a rowdy affair when they take to the track, Saturday night was no different for the drivers of the Island Motors II Bombers during their 20-lap feature.

Starting from the third position, Derek Long wasted no time ratcheting up the excitement as he raced three-wide down the frontstretch at the start of the race and into turn 1. Making contact with another car, Long somehow held on to control of his car and emerged with the lead.

The lead didn’t last long, as B.J. Leytham emerged with the top spot exiting turn 4 on the next lap.

With three caution flags in the opening nine laps of the race, division points leader Matt Jackson was able to move to the third position by the time the caution flew again on lap 9.

As the laps wound down, Jackson who found himself on the bumper of leader Robert Loper with two laps to go. The duo would race side by side, with Jackson taking the lead in turn three on the final lap. Loper moved back to the inside, with the two leaders making contact. Both drivers were able to hang on, as Jackson beat Loper to the finish line.

Gene Denmark finished in third, with Leytham fourth and Tommie Blocker in fifth.
