Rome Speedway opened its 2014 season with a very rare Saturday night race this past weekend to great weather, beautiful mountain scenery and a large crowd in attendance to see William Thomas best the 20 car Super Late Model field.

With the drop of the Green, Williams immediately took the lead with Aaron Ridley and Jason Hiett giving chase. Thomas expanded his lead as Hiett and Ridley battled each other for second. Thomas took the checkers with no serious challenges for the lead with Hiett taking second followed by Ridley. Donald McIntosh followed in fourth with Derek Ellis making his way through the field to fifth.

Popular driver Don Jenkens looked to be headed to victory lane in the Steel Head Late Model feature until turn four on the final lap when Gadsden, AL’s Dillon Tidmore made the pass coming for the checkers. Justin Litchford followed in third, with Jason Smith in fourth and Trevor Thompson completing the top five.

T.J. Brittain took the win over Michael Page in the Crate feature with Maddie Crane trailing in third. Jimmy Elliott came home in fourth with Colby Kilgore finishing fifth.

The Super Bomber feature had Andy Morris crossing the line for his first win of the season. Completing the top five were Josh Pilcher, Justin Begley, Tom Watson and Jackie Waites.

James Gagnon took advantage of his front row starting spot to get the win in the Economy Bomber race. Gagnon held off Josh Pilcher, Austin Smith, Chris Camp and Seth Lacey.

Shannon Etheridge took yet another win in the Pony Stock feature. Ronnie Faucett, Von Casey, Christopher Etheridge, and David Kirkland followed to complete the top five.

Jimmy Wilson held off Todd Lankster and brother George Wilson to take the Cruiser win. The team of Jerry Barnes/Jerry Fowler was fourth with Billy West in fifth.
