Anthony Anders knows his way to victory lane at Greenville-Pickens Speedway. On Saturday, he took the hard way and still made it to his favorite destination.
Anders brought a car that hadn’t raced at the Easley, SC speedway in two years, a car that lost its power steering system and developed a vibration halfway through the 40-lap feature, and drove it past Trey Gibson to take the win.
Gibson settled for second while fast qualifier Roger Powell finished third.
“It was a really big handful – I really had to wrestle with it,” Anders said in victory lane. “We haven’t raced this car out here this year, but it was locked on the bottom around the track.”
Gibson used the bottom lane to drive under Anders in the opening laps. But a string of late-race cautions brought Anders and Powell, who were constantly battling for second, back into contention for the lead.
Gibson brought the fight back to Anders in the race’s final five laps. With two to go, he drove under Anders in turn 1 but could not carry the momentum off turn 2. On the final lap, he tried the same move in turn 3 and ended up with the same result.
After the race, Powell and Gibson brushed fenders as the two went into the pits. The contact was a theme for the evening.
In the Street Stock division, Freddy Hale moved to the front of the field early, and that proved to be the safest position on the race track. On the first lap, Curt Allen drifted high in turn 2 and bounced off the outside wall, which shot his car into the inside wall.
On the restart, Dylan Crowe tangled with Drew Moser, sending both cars careening into the turn 1 wall. The two exchanged words and a few punches after their crash, which also collected Travis Shelton. After a lengthy clean up, Allen restarted on the point and won the two-lap shootout.
Only four street stocks finished, and only four trucks started in the next event, which saw Brad Jeter lead wire to wire to score the win. Rob Root chased him for several laps but had to settle for second, with Austin Northcutt and Mike Mote rounding out the rest of the field.
Not even moving to the rear of the 10-car field could keep Ricky Stephens out of victory lane. Stephens started shotgun but moved to the lead after just three laps, holding off James Johnson to claim his fifth straight win.
Johnson held on for second, with Andy Norris, Travis Cox and Danny Gilbert rounding out the top five.
In the Renegade division, Andrew Cordell led all but one lap in the feature event. His problem? Dale Stancil led the last one.
Stancil dove under Cordell as the two drove off into turn 1 on the final lap and held off a counter attack to pick up the win.
The race was slowed twice on lap nine, first for a Phillip Peters spin in turn 4. On the restart, Barry Thorton, Bobby Emory and Parker Jameson collected each other in turn 1. Emory rallied after the caution to finish third.
In the final race of the night, the 4-cylinder division, Charlie Hopper muscled his way under Ray Mullinax in turn 1 for the lead and the win on the final lap. Mullinax held on for second.
