Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL has provided some really great racing moments already in 2013, but the drama that occurred on Saturday night may have topped it all. Four divisions of racing action provided race fans with plenty of excitement in a fast paced evening in which 12 races were held, beginning at the new 7 pm start time, and the final checkered flag falling at 9:38 pm.

Donnie Hamrac rocketed from his outside front row starting position into the lead and looked to be sure to shake the proverbial monkey off his back, only to go up in smoke midway thru the event, victim of an overheating engine. This left heat race winner Donald Crocker, at the front of the pack with a lead he would never relinquish. It was the second win of the season for the Charlie McAdams team, as Crocker’s teammate Brandon Howell had won on opening night. Howell came in second after a fierce battle with James Patrick, who in turn had to fight off Chris Cotto, who came home fourth. Steven Durbin rounded out the top five. Crowd favorite Dave Mader III fell victim to a mechanical failure early in the event.

In what is rapidly becoming a crowd favorite division among race fans, the Pro Truck feature did not disappoint as veteran racer Okie Mason showed the way, picking up his first of 2013, outdueling Jay Jay Day and Chopper Stagner. Sometimes the final standings don’t tell the whole story. Such was the case in the Sportsman feature, as the racers put on a dramatic performance, with none other than Steve Buttrick scoring yet another victory. It appeared that Red Dog Reynolds would prevail as he led the entire distance from the pole, but he drifted slightly exiting turn four coming to the white flag, allowing an eager Buttrick just enough room to crowd his Chevrolet underneath. A side by side battle ensued on the final lap, with Buttrick pulling ahead in the final turn to pick up the Win. Reynolds was followed to the stripe by Mark Barnhill, while Bob Bryant and Chad Robinson rounded out the top five. Heat races were won by Brannon Fowler and Barnhill.

Matt Jackson would eventually overtake Kraft for second, while David Johnson and Wesley Barnhill completed the top five. Barnhill and T. J. Thompson were the Heat race winners.
