With a hard charging T.J. Reaid nipping at his heels, Bubba Pollard kept the competition at bay to score his second straight Southern Super Series Super Late Model victory in as many events Saturday night at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, GA.
After moving to the lead with on lap 77, the Senoia, Georgia speedster withstood several challenges by Reaid to make the trip to Gresham’s victory lane.
“We had a good race car,” said Pollard in victory lane. “At the same time, T.J. did too. We had to work for that one. I felt like I had to stay out in front of him, it was going to be hard for him to pass us.
“I can’t thank T.J. enough for racing us clean, because he could have taken us out any time. That’s part of racing, and one day I’ll return the favor.”
Pollard started out the night by posting the fastest lap in qualifying, turning a lap around the high banked half mile in 16.416 seconds at 109.649 mph. A six car invert before the start of the 125 lap feature meant Dacula, GA’s Russell Fleeman would lead the 31 car field to green, with Stephen Nasse on the outside.
The race was barely underway before a grinding crash unfolded in turn one, gathering up Donnie Wilson, Chet Morrison, Fredrick Moore, David Odell and Allen Karnes. Wilson got the worst end of the deal, with his car making hard contact on the driver’s side with the outside wall. No one was injured, but the incident led to a red flag condition to clean up the scene.
On the restart, Fleeman would jump to the lead, with Austin Theriault in second and Nasse in third. Nasse would move to second one lap later, with Reaid moving past Pollard to third.
Reaid would continue his early charge to the front, moving around Nasse for second on lap eight, then powering to the inside of Fleeman for the lead just three laps later.
A hard crash by R.S. Senter into the turn three wall slowed the race again on lap 20. Despite the hard hit and a flash fire, Senter, who was making his first Super Late Model start, was uninjured. His night, however, was over.
On the restart, Reaid would retain the lead, with Nasse charging to second and Daniel Hemric moving to third. Meanwhile, behind them, Mike Garvey worked to hold Pollard off for fourth position. Pollard would work over the veteran Garvey over several laps, finally making his way into fourth on lap 48. Three laps later, Pollard would move into third. The top three would hold their position up to the lap 75 competition break.
During the break, officials determined there would be a six car invert for the start of the final 50 lap sprint, putting Fleeman back in the top spot, followed by Garvey in second, Nasse in third, Pollard in fourth, Hemric in fifth, and Reaid in sixth.
On the restart, Fleeman would move into the lead, with Pollard charging to second, and Garvey moving to third. Two laps later, Pollard drove past Fleeman into the lead.
One lap later, Augie Grill went around in turn four, bringing out the caution. Grill barely tagged the wall, but was able to drive away.
The caution would fly again two laps later when Tyler Audie went around in turn three. He was able to drive away.
Pollard would move out to the lead on the restart, while Reaid moved to second, and Garvey moved to second.
While Pollard and Reaid pulled away, waging their own battle for the lead, Hemric and Fleeman put on a spirited battle for third before Hemric pulled away.
On the final lap, Reaid pushed hard, looking for a way around Pollard, but could not find one as Pollard scored the win. Reaid finished in second, with Hemric in third, Hunter Robbins in fourth, and Fleeman in fifth.
Theriault, Garvey, Nasse, John Hunter Nemechek, and Jerick Johnson rounded out the top ten.
With the win, Pollard carries a lot of momentum into the third Southern Super Series event, which is slated for Saturday, May 4 at Montgomery Motor Speedway in Montgomery, AL.
“Anytime you can win races like this, it helps for the championship later on in the year,” said Pollard. “But right now we’re just here to win races and we’ve got good race cars, so we’re looking forward to Montgomery next week and on into the rest of the season.

In other action, Spanky Hicks led the Mini Stocks feature down to green, taking the early lead over Anthony Burgess and Allen Cantrell. The only caution of the event flew on lap 4, when Erik Czechowski blew an engine in turn one, leading to a red flag for clean up for oil dropped on the track.
Hicks retained the lead on the restart, but would slow on lap 7 with an engine issue. Burgess moved to the lead, and would stay there through the rest of the feature. Hicks finished in second, with Cantrell in third.
In Trucks action Kevin Vasser moved out to the early lead, with Emilee Riley moving to second. The two would fight for the top spot, and on lap 10, they made contact, with Vasser spinning into the inside wall, ending his night. Riley was sent to the back of the field by race officials for rough driving.
That moved Matt Vasser to the lead, with Ronnie Wehunt in second and Riley in third. On lap 17, Riley and Wehunt tangled off turn four, sending Wehunt around and into the inside wall. Wehunt’s night was over, and so was Riley’s as she was parked by race officials.
Meanwhile, Matt Vasser drove away to score the win. Matt Wortman, the only other truck remaining on the track, finished in second.
In the Outlaw Late Model feature, Brian Hardman moved out to the early lead, with Jason Bates charging to second. Bates would begin charging on the leader, and on lap 12, would make the move on the inside off of turn four to take the lead.
While Bates checked out, David Murphy and David Wragg did battle for fourth place. With a couple of laps to go, Wragg finally made the move, taking the position away.
Meanwhile, up front, Bates moved away for the win. Hardman finished in second, with Hoyt Stephens in third, Wragg in fourth, and Murphy in fifth.
Jeff Chadwick won in Sportsman action, while Bryan Beckner won the Renegades feature.
