It had been some three years and 80 races since Grant Jordan had last parked in victory lane. That long dry spell came to an end Saturday night at Hartwell Speedway in Hartwell, GA, when beat Frankie Beard and Danny Sanders in a heart stopper of a finish in the Crate Late Model feature, with the top three running so close to the checkered flag you could throw a blanket over them.

Jordan jumped out to the early lead, but would see that early advantage go away when Colby Cannon went around in turn two, with the cars of Bryce Alewine and Cole Hardy becoming involved as well.

After a red flag condition to reset the field, Jordan and Beard would do battle on the restart for the lead. Jordan would move away into the top spot, with Beard giving chase in second and Sanders moving to third.

Over the next 11 laps, Beard would look daylight around Jordan several times, with Jordan managing to hold him off each time.

The caution came out again on lap 12, when Drew Collins went around on the frontstretch.

Jordan would hold the lead again on the restart, but Beard wasn’t ready to give up. With four laps to go, Beard got a strong run on the inside of Jordan, but couldn’t make it stick.

As the top three entered the final lap, they ran nose-to-tail. Coming to the checkered flag off the fourth turn, you could throw a blanket over the top three cars, but Jordan held on for the win, with Beard in second, Sanders in third, Nathan Bray in fourth, and Cannon recovering from his early spin to finish in fifth.

In other action, Jeremy Jones and Chris Jones would battle side-by-side for the early lead in the Modified Street feature. The leaders tangled, with John Teasley becoming a part of it. That allowed Charlie Burroughs to move to first, with Michael Segars in second, and Brandon Puckett in third. Teasley would slow on the frontstretch, bringing out the caution.

Burroughs would hold the lead on the restart, but Chris Jones was making up lost ground, moving to third on lap 3, and would start working on second place. On lap 5, Puckett would slip, allowing Jones to get by. He was looking for the lead one lap later when Teasley spins again off turn four.

On the restart, Burroughs held the lead, but Jones was not to be denied. Off the second turn, Jones charged into the top spot. While he moved away over the closing laps, Burroughs and Puckett swapped second place back and forth. At the checkered flag, it was Jones scoring the win, with Burroughs in second, Puckett in third, Richard Jones in third, and Segars in fifth.

In Stock V8 action, Danny Murray grabbed the lead off the start, but got loose off turn two, allowing Josh Bates to move to the lead. Bates would see that lead go away with a spin in the third turn, drawing the caution and setting up a complete restart. On the restart, Terry Brown moved to the lead, with Murray in second and Ricky Chamberlain in third. Caution would fly again when Chamberlain and Cal Moon went around in turn four, with Jesse Thurmond getting a piece of the action too. With the race still having not completed a lap, race officials again called for a complete restart.

Brown would move to the lead on the restart, with Murray in second and Thurmond in third. Thurmond would charge to second on the next lap, with Cal Moon making his way up to third.

While Brown checked out, Moon would try several times to get around Thurmond, with the two even making contact a few times. When the checkered flag flew, it was Brown with the win. Thurmond and Moon raced side-by-side down the backstretch for second, with Thurmond getting the position at the finish line. Moon was third, followed by Bates in fourth and Murray in fifth.

The wildest action of the night occurred during and after the Stock 4 feature. It started with three wide racing on the drop of the green going into the third turn, with Cy Strickland coming away with the lead, followed by Jeffery Lord and J.J. Garrett. The action would be stopped twice for cautions flags, both drawn by spins by Mike Little.

Strickland would return to the lead on the restart, with Lord and Garrett giving chase. Garrett would look for second around Lord, with the two making contact on lap 4, sending Lord around and bringing out another caution.

Strickland moved back out front on the restart, with Garrett in second and Ryan Boles in third. Caution flew again when Brent Couch spun off turn four. It would come out again when Kevin Tullis slowed to a stop on the frontstretch with a flat right rear tire. It came out yet again when Shawn Thomas got into the wall off turn two.

Through all this, Strickland held the lead. Garrett tried a couple of times to get the position, but could not make the pass stick. When the checkered flag flew, it was Strickland scoring the victory, with Garrett in second, Boles in third, Scott Hollars in fourth, and Cody Byrum in fifth.

But the action wasn’t over yet, as a scuffle broke out at the scale house, drawing a big crowd. Race officials broke it up, but another broke out on the other side of the scale house. Eventually, track officials and members of the Hart County Sheriff’s Office got things under control, and the night’s racing was able to continue.

In the Young Guns feature, Payton Freeman jumped out to the early lead, with Travis Hubbard moving to second and Mason Tucker in third. One lap later, Tucker moved to second, and began closing on the leader. On lap six, Mitchell Ledford slowed on the backstretch, bringing out the caution. On the restart, Freeman and Tucker would continue their battle for the top spot.

Coming to lap six, Freeman and Tucker tangle on the frontstretch, sending both spinning into the frontstretch wall. Both end up stuck in the mud on the inside, and need help to get going again.

That moved Travis Hubbard to the lead and he would go on to be flagged the winner. But a tussle after the race led to his disqualification, handing Jeremy Hicks his first win, with Jessica Still in second, Freeman in third, Tucker in fourth, and Ledford in fifth.

In Limited Late Mode action, Bubba Russell was obviously in a hurry, as he charged from his fourth place starting spot to take the lead on the first lap of the feature. The action slowed on the second lap when a flat left front tire on Wesley English’s car caused him problems off turn two.

Russell would retain the lead on the restart, with Parker Herring moving to second and Shane Yarbrough in third.

Herring would close in several times over the feature and try to challenge Russell, but Russell would hold him off each time.

With five laps to go, Herring caught Russell again, and was looking for daylight around the leader. Coming to the white flag, Herring gave it one more shot, but couldn’t make it happen. Russell scored the win, with Herring in second, Yarbrough in third, Keith Freeman in fourth, and Anthony Craft in fifth.

In the Up Front feature, Seth Brown jumped out to the early lead, with Trey Chapman and Keith Hicks giving chase. Chapman would make a try for the lead in turn four, only to spin up the track, drawing the caution. On the restart, Brown would move back to the lead, with Hicks in second and Wayne Chapman in third. It wouldn’t be long before Morris Lester would move up to challenge for the lead, with Chapman moving into the fight as well. Things would come to a head when Lester spun off turn four, bringing out another caution.

On the restart, Chapman would challenge Hicks for the lead, taking the top spot off of the fourth turn.

A scary moment occurred when Brown slowed suddenly off turn two. Joel Powell, Sr. would spin trying to avoid him, and would hit the inside wall head on. Powell was okay, but his night was over.

Meanwhile, up front, Chapman will hold the lead and go on to score the win. Mike Mosley finishes in second, with Hicks in third, Brown in fourth, and Josh Wells in fifth.

Hartwell Speedway returns to action on Saturday, April 27, with $500 on the line for the win in the Stock V8 division, along with a full race program. For more info, visit hartwell-speedway.com.
