A difference of a foot inches gave Rick Hixson the Steel Head Late Model victory Friday night at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, GA.

Hixson and Johnny Cloer, Jr. brought the field down to green for the feature, and a quick battle brewed between the two. Hixson would take the early lead followed by Cloer Jr. and Jerry Coffman, while Riley Hickman made his way to the front. Hickman would soon move around Coffman on the outside to take over the third place, and he Cloer, Jr. would battle for second place.

On the seventh lap, Cloer, Jr. made contact with Hickman, then would make hard contact with the backstretch wall, leaving his car heavily damage.

The next 18 laps would see competitive racing from two seasoned veterans as Hixson and Hickman raced side-by-side for several laps, all the while never making contact. Hixson was out front and was able to take the lane away from Hickman to get the run off the corner that he needed to pass.

With two laps to go, Hickman began to work Hixson hard on the bottom. As the white flag was waved, the two passed at a dead heat. Hixson carried his car deep into turn one as Hickman was diving to the bottom for what was the last time. As the two rounded turn 4, Hixson and Hickman they passed under the checkered flag Hixson had the slight edge to score the victory.

Dewayne Powell finished third, with Kevin Gibson in fourth, and Mike Tinker in fifth.

In other action, Dallas Brooks and Jeff Irvin started on the front row of the B-Hobby feature after winning their respected heats. The feature event would prove to be a caution laden 15 lap event. At the drop of the green, Brooks set sail for turn one only to be slowed for the night’s first caution on lap 1 as Chip Henry lost a left rear tire, ending his night before it even got started.

Back under green Brooks would set sail once again only to see the yellow out once again on lap 4. Cautions would fly again on laps 10, 11, and 12 before Brooks would finally take another victory. Ronnie Kerr, Jeff Irvin, Josh Kilgore, and David Vickers rounded out the top five.

For the Crate Late Model feature, 16 cars made their way to the track. Jonathan Smith and defending champion Jason Welshan would lead the field to the green. An early caution would end the night for the pole sitter Smith and Danny Turner.

Once back under green, Welshan retained the lead, with Grayson York giving chase. After a lap nine caution the field would go caution free the rest of the way, as Welshan took the win. York finished in second, with Tanner Works in third, Lamar Scoggins in fourth, and David Tindell in fifth.

The A-Hobby feature would see Beau Bice take the early lead over Michael Brooks. A quick caution in turn two on lap 1, as Brandon Stanfield spun out of fifth place. Back under green, Bice held the lead, with Booger Brooks in pursuit. On lap nine, the lap car of Thomas Cagle cut down the track in front of the field, collecting Michael Brooks. Brooks would retain his third place spot for the restart.

On the restart, Booger Brooks dove under Bice in turn four, taking the lead as the duo thundered into turn one. Bice would continue to hound Brooks, but would go on to core the win. Bice finished second, followed by Josh Walker, B.J. Wilson, and John Clark III.
In Front Runner action, Daniel Burnette scored the win, with Brad Cross in second and Tommy Hughes in third.

The SRRS Super Late Models invade Boyd’s Speedway on Friday, April 19, along with action from the Crate Late Models, A-Hobby and B-Hobby divisions. For more info, visit www.boydsspeedway.net.
