With spring time just around the corner Boyd Speedway hosted the Spring Triple Header on Friday night, with   William Thomas inheriting the win in the Steel Head Late Model feature after Ray Cook’s car was found to have unapproved mufflers.

The feature event would bring the full field of 24 Steel Headed Late Model to the track for their 40 lap, $3000 to win sponsored by Advanced Title Pawn. With Thomas and Cook bringing the field to the green for the first time, Thomas would capture the top spot early as Cook worked to get past.  Cook would race past Thomas for the lead but was unable to pull away.  Rick Hixson would soon find himself in third behind Cook and Thomas.  The feature was slowed several times for cautions, but in the end Cook would take the checkered flag.  A post-race inspection would find Cook’s car illegal with un-approved mufflers.  Thomas would take the $3000 followed by Hixson, Riley Hickman, Kevin Gibson and Todd Morrow.

In other action, the B-Hobby division would battle first in their 15 lap feature.  But the night would be filled with the same ‘ole results as Dallas Brooks would show the field to the checkered flag.  Following Brooks would be Corey Sanders in second, with Daniel Johnston in third, Joshua Kilgore in fourth, and Floyd Brooks in fifth.

The A-Hobby feature was up next with a pair of Soddy Daisy second generation driver’s bringing the field to the green flag.  Bo Bice got his last minute instruction from his father Morris Bice while Brandon Stanfield would get his instruction from his dad Randy Stanfield.  As things go both the elder racers shops were located across the street from one another years ago in Hixson.  Bo Bice would take the early lead at the drop of the green followed by Stanfield and B.J. Wilson.  By lap three, Wilson had moved around Stanfield for the runner-up spot.  Defending Division Champion Booger Brooks would start his way to the front from his 14th starting position.  By lap six Brooks would work his way into the top five, but the first caution on lap 14 would see Brooks spin in turn 4.  Bice had built a straightaway lead before the caution flew.

When the green flew once again, Bice went right back to where he left with last week’s winner, Glen Seaton, on his tail.  Bice would hold off any challenges from the field and take his first ever career feature win, pocketing $500 for his reward. Rounding out the top five were Seaton, Stanfield, Wilson and Matthew Morr.

The Crate Late Models were brought to the front stretch for their 30 lap, $2000 to win feature sponsored by Jody Millard Pest Control.  With Georgia’s Jeff Smith setting fast time, he seemed set to get the monkey off his back that has plagued him this year.  Smith would jump to the early lead, followed by Chris Wilson as two Super Late Models, Ray Cook and Ronnie Johnson began a fight for third and fourth.  Cook would get around Wilson, setting his sights on Smith for the lead as Wilson and Johnson battled for third.  Wilson and Johnson tangled in turn 2, which brought out the caution.  Track officials determined the caution was on Wilson.  Wilson didn’t like the call and took his machine to the pits ending his night.

As racing resumed, Smith and Cook would battle for the lead, but on this night Smith would take his first victory of the new year with Cook, Johnson, Riley Hickman and track regular and defending division champion Jason Welshan rounding out the top five.
