Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL returns to action this Saturday night with heat and feature racing for Bombers and Super Stock-Trucks plus a 50-lap, $2,000-to-win Sportsman Challenge.
The drivers of the Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman division are the unsung heroes of Mobile International Speedway. While the ARCA Series and Late Models receive the bulk of the headlines, the Sportsman division always steals the show. The drivers of that division will get the opportunity to do both on Saturday night at Alabama’s Fastest Half-Mile.
Brannon Fowler leads the championship standings with 698 points and has maintained the top spot since the second week of the season.
He has two wins but hasn’t visited victory lane since March, 24. He’s going to need a few more to hold off surging teammates James Patrick and Chad Robinson. Both have climbed within 100 points of Fowler’s lead, remarkable considering his once-massive advantage. Fowler is fully aware of the trend and is preparing a stronghold around the Sportsman Challenge.
“It really means a lot to me that we are in the main event on Saturday night,” said Fowler. “There’s a lot of pride in knowing that we are what the fans want to see. It makes me want to go out and raise the bar to prove to ourselves and the fans that we’re the best show. We’re not holding anything back.”
“We’ve been struggling with our on-track performance and we’ve taken some steps to change that,” Fowler said. “With that said, I think we’ve gotten a lot of that resolved over the last few off-weeks and we’re starting to feel good about our chances.”
Robinson leads all sportsman drivers with five wins, including four in a row late in the spring. His latest win came on Aug. 4 and is hoping to start a new streak in the biggest race of the season. Patrick is surging as well, coming within just a few tenths of a second of defeating Robinson last time out. A breakthrough victory could immediately get him to within championship contention as well.
“I honestly think Brannon has the championship covered but it takes just one night of bad luck to change things,” Patrick said. “I’m prepared for the next few weeks and we are going to do our best to try and catch him.”
Patrick is 52 points behind Fowler with Robinson 81 points out. That having been said this weekend isn’t about points it’s about the massive $2,000 payday. With that much cash on the line points will be out the window.

Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks
Steve “Chopper” Stagner became the first super truck driver to win in the combined cars versus trucks series when he won the Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks feature on Apr. 7. Now he’s looking to double-up on history, winning the first such championship in division history, entering Saturday night with a 32-point lead over Jessie Reid.
But Reid and third-place Okie Mason (-84 points) are preparing their final stand, with a hard-charging JayJay Day and Todd Pitts actually outperforming the championship contenders over the last few weekends. It’s arguably the most competitive division on a week-to-week basis.
Island Motor II Bombers
Jerry Goff Jr. became the latest first-time winner at Mobile International Speedway on Aug. 4 when he capitalized on several mid-race accidents and terminal failures to become the division’s fourth different winner this season.
Championship contenders Brandon Tipton and Jayme Corry both finished at the bottom of the order, maintaining Tipton’s 39 point lead. Corry leads the division with five wins and will need to continue winning to bridge the gap. That won’t be an easy task with Goff hitting his stride.
The heat races will also provide an opportunity for new faces to compete for the chance to go to victory lane, providing some of the most action-packed moments of the season.
