The skies over Hartwell Speedway were filled with dazzling fireworks this past Saturday, but nothing compared to the fireworks that took place on the speedway.
Frankie Beard beat all comers in the FASTRAK Late Model event, as he beat out Parker Herring, Johnny Tucker Jr., Grant Jordan and Kyre Mullaney for the victory.
The night would start out with a very scary accident involving Stock V8 point’s leader Randy Shaw. Shaw, who has had a very successful 2011 season, had it all come to a screeching halt within one lap.
It all began when Justin Mauldin experienced a problem while coming of turn four causing his #14 to get a little loose just as Shaw was trying to complete a pass. Contact would be made between the two causing the #44 of Shaw to slide down the speedway and hit the front straightaway wall at full speed. The impact not only totaled his car it also shattered his knee. Several rescue workers would work hard to remove Shaw from his car without further injuring him.

Shaw would later undergo surgery to repair his knee and while he will recover he will not be able to return to racing in 2011.
Once the race got back underway, Otis Fleeman picked up the victory. He was followed to the flag by Michael Seagars and Cal Moon, with Jerry Teasley picking up fourth.
In the Limited Late Model division, Kenny Collins stunned the fans with an unbelievable high side passes to take home his second victory of the year. Collins, who had a mid-field staring position, picked off his competition one by one by running a high line that no one else seemed to have a handle on. Keith Freeman finished second, with Parker Herring, Stephen Segars and Jimmy Johnson rounding out the top five.
Chad Hoopaugh crossed the finish line first to pick up the victory in the Modified Street division, beating out Rusty Jordan, Paul Bynum, Johnny Tucker, Sr. and Jack Hill.
In the Young Guns division, the win went to Jason Calhoun, who beat out Mitchell Ledford, Daniel Doster, Bryan Nickerson and Justin Wilson.
Morris Lester came away with the win in the Up Front class, topping Steven Powell, Joel Powell, Sr., Joey Butler and Stacy Powell.
In the Stock Four Cylinder division, it was Adam Smith picking up the win, beating Jimmy Little, Ashley Poole, Mitchell Godfrey and Marty Hayes.
Hartwell Speedway returns to action this coming Saturday night, with a full race program plus a bonus “Rewind Race” for the Stock V-8 division sponsored by Slingin’ Dirt.
