Austin Horton wrote a page in the history books on Thursday night as the winner of the first ever Schaeffer’s Oil Southern Nationals Series sanctioned Super Late Model race in the history of West Georgia Speedway in Whitesburg, Georgia.
The Newnan, Georgia speedster led wire-to-wire to score the win at the 3/8-mile clay facility, taking home a $4,053 payday for the win in the 40-lap feature.
It marks Horton’s third career series victory, moving him into a tie for eleventh all-time on the series win list with Mike Marlar and Clint Smith
“It feels great to win here at West Georgia,” Horton said. “I made my first laps here. I cut my teeth here in a street stock. We’ve came a long way in a short time. Man, I don’t even know what to say … just glad to do it at the hometown track and get us another win. After a rough hot laps, it couldn’t have went any better after that.”
Outside pole sitter Brent Dixon chased Horton throughout the race, but never managed a serious bid for the top spot. The Elberton, Georgia driver finished 1.775 seconds behind in second.
Pearson Lee Williams came home in third, with Garrett Smith in fourth and Colbert, Georgia’s Kenny Collins in fifth.
Mark Whitener, Dalton Cook, Dawsonville, Georgia’s Donald McIntosh, Cody Overton, and Wil Herrington rounded out the top 10.
