While several competitors tangled behind him, Dale Timms drove to the lead and the win in the City Chevrolet 602 Thunder Series feature Saturday night at Georgia’s Winder-Barrow Speedway.
The Hodges, South Carolina speedster started the night on the outside of the front row, alongside pole sitter Michael Smith. On the drop of the green flag, Smith used the inside line to power to the lead in turn one, with Timms and Blake Craft in pursuit.
The first caution of the night flew one lap later for trouble in turn two. On the restart, Smith again held the lead, with Craft moving to second around Timms. But the start would be negated when a multi-car crash broke out in turn 3. It was triggered when Dillon Dave spun, gathering up Kenny Collins, Nick Sellers, Kevin Johson and Michael Barrett, among others.
On the restart, Timms used a strong run on the outside of turns 1 and 2 to move to the lead, while Smith and Craft battled for second behind him.
The leaders saw near disaster a few laps later when a pair of slower cars spun in front of them in turn two. Timms and Smith were barely able to avoid the trouble, while Craft spun while trying to slow down. Craft was able to keep his position since he spun trying to avoid the stopped cars.
On the ensuing restart, a spin near the front triggered another multi-car crash in turn 2, bringing the caution back out.
That set up a single file restart, with Timms moving back out to the lead. Craft would move to second on the next lap, with Smith in third. More trouble brought out another caution flag, and a spin on the ensuing restart by Dillon Dave resulted in the final caution of the night.
Back under green, Timms moved back to the point, with Craft working hard to try to find a way around the leader. Timms held the lead the rest of the way to score the victory.
Craft had to settle for second, with Smith in third, Rod Roberts in fourth and John Price in fifth.
Collins, Johnson, Sellers, Barrett and Dave rounded out the top 10.
