Bubba Russell scored his eighth Limited/Crate Late Model feature victory of 2018 at Georgia’s Hartwell Speedway on Saturday night.
But a couple of near misses over the course of the 25 lap feature almost derailed the Comer, Georgia driver’s night, and could have spelled disaster for his No. 32 “Hog Rocket.”
After blistering the 3/8 mile clay raceway in qualifying with a lap at 16.390 to score the pole for the feature, Russell beat competitors Will Russell and Ashley Poole into turn one on the start to take the lead.
But as the leaders charged into turn three, Russell’s car seemed to catch a spot on the track, sending him sideways and almost lifting the left side of the car off the ground.
Russell stayed in the throttle, powering the car through the turn and holding onto the top spot.
The second near miss came as Russell worked through lap traffic. While trying to stay on the lead lap, two-time feature winner Eric Veal battled with Russell, holding the leader up and allowing Harris and Poole to reduce his lead dramatically.
Moments after clearing Veal, Russell was working to get away when his pursuers also encountered trouble in lap traffic, with Harris spinning in turn four to bring out the caution.
On the restart, Russell powered back to the lead. Poole appeared to be closing on the leader in the final laps, but in the end it was Russell scoring his eighth victory of the season.
Scott Chatham finished in third, with Jimmy Ivester in fourth and Veal in fifth.
In other action, Shane Yarbrough held off Joe Yarbrough to score the Hobby feature victory. Shun Thomas came home in third, with Scott Russell in fourth and Joseph “BooMan” Galloway in fifth.
Joe Nash held off Preston Strickland to take the win in the Modified Street feature. Bryce Alewine finished third, with Jennifer Everett fourth and Johnny Pilgrim fifth.
Dustin Evans had Paul Moore breathing down in neck in the closing laps of the Stock V8 feature, but in the end, Evans was victorious. Tyler Kennedy, John Teasley and Jeremy Jones rounded out the top five.
Jeffery Lord was the winner in the Stock Four feature. Elliott Brayboy finished in second, followed by Jeremy Fassett in third, Bubba Nation in fourth and Jacob Rohme in fifth.
Randy Shaw edged out North West in a hotly contested Front Wheel Drive feature. Kalen Holmes followed in third, with Hoss Collins in fourth and Alex Powell in fifth.
Russell Shore beat out James Wood for the win in the Enduro feature.
