For Paul Moore, June 2, 2018 marked a major near miss in his racing career.
On that night, Moore had a commanding lead in the Stock V8 feature at Georgia’s Hartwell Speedway, and appeared to be on his way to his first win at the speedway.
But a slip on the final restart with three laps to go cost him the lead and the win. He would finish a disappointing third.
On Saturday night, the Pendergrass, Georgia driver was not going to make the same mistake twice.
After surging to the lead on the drop of the green flag, Moore held a slim but strong lead over Shannon Duck, a multi-time division winner on the season. As the field came to three to go, something broke on Duck’s car, sidelining him and bringing out the caution.
Duck found himself leading again – with three laps to go, again – coming to the restart.
But this time, he stayed steady through the first two turns, then powered away from Jeremy Jones to score his first Hartwell Speedway Stock V8 feature victory.
Rocky Jones – who inherited the lead and the win from Moore the week prior – finished in third, with Cord Crowe in fourth. Duck was credited with fifth.
In other action, Eric Veal powered around polesitter Dustin Mincey to take the lead on the start of the combined Limited/Crate Late Model feature, and went on to edge Mincey out to take the victory. Grant Jordan finished third, with Derrick Harvey fourth and Jimmy Ivester fifth.
In the Hobby feature, Joe Cash powered to the lead after Jimmy Mason and Joe Yarbrough tangled on the backstretch, and went on to score the win. Boo Man Galloway, Yarbrough, Jimmy Ivester and Jake Anderson rounded out the top five.
Joe Nash held off Thomas Segars and Kyle Gordon to take the win in the Modified Street feature. Jennifer Everett finished in fourth, followed by Tim Bohannon in fifth.
One week after landing on the pit side of the turn one guardrail while racing for the lead, Ryan Boles made the trip to Hartwell’s victory lane with a win in the Stock Four feature. Pete Whitley, who also landed atop the turn one guardrail the week prior, finished in second.
North West moved to the early lead on the opening lap of the Up Front feature, and drove away to the victory. Joel Powell, Sr. finished second, with Randy Shaw in third, John Shaw in fourth and Alex Powell in fifth.
