Sterling Helm charged to the lead of the Modified Street feature with just a couple of laps to go, and went on to score the season opening victory at Georgia’s Hartwell Speedway Saturday afternoon.
Helm, from Gainesville, Georgia, had battled throughout the 15-lap feature with leader Wormy Gaddis, finally getting his shot to get to the top spot as the two raced off of turn four with just a few laps to go.
With the white flag in the air, it appeared that Gaddis would get one last shot at Helms, but when Gaddis slowed suddenly off of turn two, Helm powered away to the win. Thomas Segars finished in second, with Chris Nickerson in third, John Braneley in fourth and Casey Cagle in fifth.
The scariest moment of the night came during the Stock V8 feature, as Trey Pilgrim and Shannon Duck fought for the lead a couple of laps after a restart.
Fortunately, Pilgrim was uninjured, but his night was over.
After a lengthy red flag condition to allow for clean up, Duck would go on to hold off Rock Jones for the win. Stephen House finished in third, with Brandon Long in fourth.
While racing off into turn three, something broke on the right rear of leader Pilgrim’s car, sending his car flipping side-over-side about nine times before coming to rest upright in the middle of the turn.
There was more excitement in the Crate Late Model feature, as Kenny Collins used a strong move on the outside line to charge past Adam Smith and David McCoy to take the lead. From there, Collins went on to hold off Smith for the victory. McCoy finished in third, followed by Nick Dietz in fourth and Will Harris in fifth.
In other action, Ashley Poole edged out Chad Puckett for the Limited Late Model feature win. Shaun Thomas came home in third, with John Anderson in fourth and Dustin Mincey in fifth.
Royce Bray was the winner in the Hobby feature, with Daniel Doster, David Stone, Alex Yarbrough and Jay Motes rounding out the top five.
Arti Ridgeway took the victory in the Stock Four feature. James Robinson finished second, with Bubba Nation third, Jeremy Fassett fourth, and Pete Whitley fifth.
Joel Powell, Jr. scored the win in the Up Front feature, with Christ Howell in second, Randy Shaw in third, Tony Stevens in fourth, and Kalen Holmes in fifth.
Hartwell Speedway returns to action on Saturday, March 10 with racing slated for the Limited Late Model, Crate Late Model, Hobby 602, Modified Street, Stock V8, Stock 4 and Up Front divisions.
