Steven Davis Collects PLM, Pro Truck Victories At Mobile

In what may go down as one of the wildest nights ever at Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL, Steven Davis captured two victories and halted Wayne Niedecken, Jr.’s winning streak at six victories in the process.

Fresh off an impressive win in the Barry’s U Pull It Pro Truck feature, which included a meticulous charge through the field to do so, momentum was clearly on the side of the Theodore, AL native leading in to the night’s 30-lap feature which served as the nightcap.

It still wasn’t easy, however.

In a race marred by multiple lengthy cautions – one of which for a dust-up between Elliott Massey and Kurt Guillot that included beating and banging during the yellow flag – Davis was forced to survive multiple late-race restarts and hold off Niedecken who is one of the hottest drivers in the southeast in the process.

The driver of the No. 96 wasn’t fazed.

With the attention of most in the stands being centered around Niedecken, who extended his streak earlier in the he evening by winning the 20-lap feature after starting fourth, Davis put on his blinders and stole the spotlight—holding off Niedecken’s bid for a seventh consecutive victory and simultaneously placing himself as a serious threat for the remainder of the season in the process.

Despite finishing the night in the second position, Niedecken had a chance to pass Davis for the win, but ran out of time. On the bright side, however, the Florida native extended his lead in the Pro Late Model championship points standings to 87 over Dustin Smith with just one race left for the season—a 100-lap event on championship night in early September.

Brett Holmes, Ronnie Osmer and Josh Bragg rounded out the top five finishers in the 30-lap feature.

Earlier in the evening, however, the night’s proceedings appeared to be much like a broken record. Like he had done all season, Niedecken started fourth in the Pro Late Model division’s 20-lap feature and made a rapid charge through the field to score the victory.

Passing Ryan Luza with eight laps to go for the lead on the way to the win, Niedecken appeared primed to sweep his third 20/30-lap doubleheader of the season. He sure came close.

Luza, Anthony Cataldi, Smith and Ryan Crawford made up the top five finishers.

Up next for the Pro Late Model division is a 100-lap race on Championship Night on September 5.

Barry’s U Pull It Pro Trucks

Sure—Steven Davis’ performance in the 30-lap feature for the Pro Late Model division was incredible, but what he did in the 25-lap feature for the Barry’s U Pull It Pro Trucks was even better.

Starting from the ninth position, Davis methodically worked his way through the field in the race that included three lead changes among three different drivers.

Starting from the pole position, Jesse Reid quickly cemented his No. 18 at the front of the field on the opening lap of the race. His time out front, however, was short-lived as a hard-charging Ricky Vice passed him on lap two after starting fourth. Six laps later, defending division champion Okie Mason and his familiar No. 6 found himself out front.

Meanwhile, further back in the pack was a hard-charging Davis he moved into the second position on lap 16 and then set his sights on Eric Courville who took the lead away from Mason just seconds earlier.

Six laps later, Davis’ spirited charge through the field ended with an exclamation point as he rocketed past Courville with three laps to go to score his second consecutive victory in Pro Truck competition. It was a big win for Stringer Motorsports.

Mason, Ryan Worsham, Howard Langham and Courville rounded out the top five finishers.

Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsmen

Fresh off a win in the Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsmen division feature two weeks ago, 13-year-old Connor Okrzesik had plenty of momentum leading in to Saturday night’s 25-lap feature—and it was evident.

Starting from the pole position, the Grand Bay, AL native was the odd-on favorite to score his second consecutive victory, but a familiar foe made it a point to make sure that didn’t happen.

The winner of two consecutive races before Okrzesik’s trip to victory lane two weeks ago, Lee “Red Dog” Reynolds wasted no time when the green flag waved to start Saturday night’s race. After starting third, Reynolds’ No. 32 found itself leading the pack before the opening lap concluded.

Behind Reynolds, however, was a hard-charging Jay Jay Day who assumed the lead one lap later after starting fourth. To add further intrigue to the race, Okrzesik appeared to have found an extra gear in his No. 14 racer as he moved to third by the conclusion of lap three. Ten laps later, he moved to second. As the laps continued to tick away, Okrzesik consistently cut away at Reynold’s newly found lead—getting as close as two car-lengths behind him.

A lap 18 caution offered Okrzesik his big opportunity of the race on its resulting restart, but it fell to the wayside. Appearing to have found extra speed himself, Reynolds quickly pulled away to a sizeable lead and held on to score the victory despite a second charge from Okrzesik who finished second.

Shanna Ard finished in third, with Michael Ledlow fourth and Dayton Sidner in fifth.

Island Motors II Bombers

Race fans in attendance Saturday night at MIS left the track thinking that a familiar face had won the 20-lap feature for the Island Motors II Bombers. How quickly that all changed.

In a wild feature that included points leader Matt Jackson being caught up in an accident, Robert Loper crossed the start/finish line on the conclusion of the 20th lap to score what was at the time his second consecutive victory at the half-mile track.

Like it has been known to do in the past, post-race technical inspection completely changed the complexion of the race and its finishing order. For Loper, he would be on the losing end as his No. 15 failed inspection—handing over the race win to second-place finisher, Derek “Kane” Long.

Although the race was won via another driver’s disqualification, the victory was the first at MIS for the fan favorite driver who spends just as much time off the track supporting various causes and charities as he does on the track competing. It also came less than 24 hours after the death of his father, Randy. Needless to say, it was a special victory, and one that was celebrated just as heavily on the other side of the fence.

Matt Jackson, Tommie Blocker, Matt Thompson and Jonathan Byrd rounded out the top five finishers.

Racing resume at Mobile International Speedway on July 25 as the cars and stars of the Sunoco Southern Super Series return for the third of four visits to the track in 2015. Also in action will be Super Stock, Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsmen and Island Motors II Bombers division.
