Derek Ellis Opens Rome 2015 Season With SLM Victory

Derek Ellis jumped to the lead of Sunday night’s Super Late Model feature, and went on to score the win and earn a $3,000 payday as part of the season opener at Rome Speedway in Rome, GA.

While Ellis moved away for the win, the rest of the field raced hard for position behind him. When the checkered flag waved, Jason Hiett finished in second, with Ronnie Johnson in third. Both had started and stayed in the top five all night. Tyler Millwood raced his way into the fourth position followed by Clint Smith in fifth.

In other action, Mike Bruner took his first win of the season in the Steel Head Late Model feature. Mario Gresham finished in second, followed by Chris Fennell in third, Cruz Skinner in fourth and Matt Dooley in fifth.

Shane Smith led the way for the Crate Late Model feature win. Zach Pilcher, Justin McGatha, Drew Deaver and T.J. Brittain rounded out the top five.

The Super Bomber feature victory went to Willie Winsome as he held off Daniel Brewer at the checkered flag. Richard Goode was third, with Andy Morris fourth and Randall Powell fifth.

Dalton Polston led flag to flag for the Economy Bomber feature win with Austin Smith giving chase, but having to settle in second. Ryan Ray raced his way up the third followed by Dan Meadows in fourth and Eric Hamby in fifth.

Dan Bennett dominated the Pony Stock feature to score the win. Zach Sanders came home in second, followed by Mitchell Pope in third, David Kirkland in fourth and William Reed in fifth.

Edwin Scott took the win in the Cruiser race.

Rome Speedway is next in action on Sunday, May 24, as the track plays host to the OMG Ray Cook Spring Nationals Super Late Model tour, with $6,000 on the line for the winner, along with a full slate of local racing.
