Michael Arnold of Hattiesburg, MS finished fifth on Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS to end his winning streak, but it was good enough to hang on to the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series point lead after Week 3 competition. Arnold has 146 points after three wins in four races driving the Strength Center Special.
But Arnold has a new challenger for the top of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series point standings, and that is 13-year-old Cruz Skinner of Oxford, AL who moved up to the second spot with 142 points after driving the Skinner’s Body Shop CVR to victory Saturday night at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL.
The win also moved Skinner on top of the Sunoco Young Guns Challenge Series point standings. The Sunoco Young Guns Challenge Series is for NeSmith Late Model drivers 18 years of age and younger. The Young Gun with the most points at the end of the season will receive $1,000 from Sunoco Race Fuels, the Official Race Fuel of NeSmith Racing.
In three races this season, Skinner has one win, two top five finishes and three top ten finishes. Skinner trails Arnold by four points for the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series point lead, and has a three point advantage over the third-place driver, Joseph Joiner of Milton, FL.
Joiner traveled to Whynot Motorsports Park on Saturday night where he finished 13th in the Three Trade Consultants Special. After Week 3 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series action, Joiner has 139 points after one win and two top five finishes in three races.
Justin McRee of Woodstock, AL is fourth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with 132 points. McRee had one top five finish and two top ten finishes in four races driving the High Roller Race Cars Special. McRee finished seventh on Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park.
Nick Thrash of Meridian, MS and Sid Scarbrough of Florence, MS share the fifth spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with 131 points apiece. Thrash drove the McDevitt Enterprises GRT to a 15th-place finish on Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park and has one top five finish in three races.
Scarbrough has one top five finish and two top ten finishes in four NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series races driving the Villa South Trak-Star. Scarbrough finished 11th on Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park.
Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS and David Kay of Eastaboga, AL are tied for the seventh spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with 98 points apiece. Lee has one win and three top five finishes in three races driving the Billy Riels Racing Special. Kay has one win and two top five finishes in two races driving the Poor Boys Race Bodies Special. Kay finished third on Saturday night at Talladega Short Track.
Adam Cummings of Odenville, AL is ninth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with 96 points after two top five finishes in two races. Cummings finished second on Saturday night at Talladega Short Track driving the Cummings Racing GRT.
Cliff Williams of Star, MS drove the Cliff Williams Plumbing GRT to the win on Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park and moved into a tie for the tenth spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series standings with Mark Clifton of Brewton, AL with 95 points apiece. Williams has one win and two top ten finishes in two races, and Clifton has two top five finishes in two races driving the Carboline Special.
In other NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Week 3 action, Ronnie Cooper of McKenzie, TN drove the Ronnie Cooper Trucking Rocket to victory on Saturday night in the season opener at Camden Speedway in Camden, TN.
Mother Nature put a damper on four NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Week 3 races. The Friday night Week 3 race at Hattiesburg Speedway in Hattiesburg, MS was rained out. Saturday night Week 3 rainouts were at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, TX, Jackson Motor Speedway in Jackson, MS, and St. Tammany Raceway in Lacombe, LA.
In the first three weeks of NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series competition, 133 different drivers have earned points.
