The fastest qualifier during Saturday evening’s time trials at Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL, Brian Gerster won the 30-lap Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series feature- but it wasn’t easy.
Following an invert, the Fishers, Indiana native started in the seventh position and had to work his way through a tight pack of 15 cars to put his No. 50M in a spot to catch the evening’s dominant car of Jo Jo Helberg. A timely caution on lap 22 certainly helped his cause.
Appearing to be well on his way to the victory, last year’s winner at MIS, Helberg blew a right-rear tire in turn four and spun to a stop in the middle of the track. The incident erased the California native’s lead and handed it over to Gerster.
The rest was history as Gerster pulled away to a sizeable lead on the late-race restart and would win the contest by 1.8 seconds over Jimmy McCune and Troy DeCaire.
Local racing preceded the 30 lap Sprint Car feature beginning with the Super Stock division. Dave Mader, a native of Birmingham, AL, led flag to flag to add another win to his already extensive resume.
Crossing the start/finish line 2.052 seconds behind Mader, Randy Thompson came home second after contact with Bo McCraney in turn four of the 12th lap. Bobby Baria, another Alabama-based driver, finished third.
In the Sportsman division, there was no shortage of action- as a total of six cautions halted the 25 lap race. When the dust settled, Brannon Fowler of Florida came home with the win in the No. 00.

The big story of the Sportsman race, however; was the valiant effort of Mark Barnhill- who started at the tail end of the field twice following incidents, but still managed to finish second in his No. 3 car. James Patrick in the No. 11 finished third.
The action continued in the 20-lap Bomber division race. Having won all of the division’s events at MIS so far this season, all eyes were on B.J. Leytham leading in to Saturday night’s festivities- and he didn’t disappoint.
Surviving multiple restarts, the Alabama native looked to have the field well in check throughout the race, but a missed shift during a restart on lap 16 which forced him to the third position with less than a hand full of laps remaining. However, it wouldn’t take long for Leytham to pilot his No. 8 back to the front in time to score the win and continue his stranglehold on the division thus far in 2014.
Gene Denmark finished in the second position in his No. 88; with Colin Kraft finishing third.
The action at Mobile International Speedway continues on Saturday, April 26, with a 125-lap feature for the Southern Super Series Super Late Models as well as local racing from the Modified, Super Stock, Sportsman and Bombers.
