Coming into Sunday’s Southern All Star Series feature at the 35th annual Alabama State Championship race at East Alabama Raceway Park, Shane Clanton was going to have to work hard to score the win.

The Georgia speedster had finished outside the top ten in the first event on Saturday at the Phenix City, AL speed plant. But on Sunday, he came out swinging. After turning in the fast time in qualifying with a 13.905, Clanton led wire-to-wire to win the 40-lap, $4,000 to win feature, beating out 30 other cars for the victory.

His only hurdle would be Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. who gave chase early on. But as the race wore on, Lloyd proved to be no match for Clanton, as he went on to cross the finish line first in the No. 25 Kennedy Motorsports Capital race car, making his first SAS victory of 2013, and his 11th career series win.

Lloyd, Jr. came home in second, with Jonathan Davenport in third, Chris Madden in fourth, and Clint Smith in fifth.

In Saturday’s Super Late Model race, it was Chris Madden who proved to have the edge on the field, as he drove away from Jonathan Davenport for the victory. Lloyd, Jr. finished in third, with Randy Weaver in fourth, and Ray Cook in fifth.

In other action, Bobby Thomas scored the Sportsman victory, beating out William Thomas for the win. J.R. Moseley finished in third, with Chaz Haskins in fourth, and Tyler Ivey in fifth.

Thomas would score the Crate Late Model victory. Brian Connor came home in second, with Todd Morrow in third, Mack McCarter in fourth, and Joey Thomas in fifth.

Terrance Nowell picked up the Super Street feature victory. Jody Knowles finished in second, followed by Jimmy Thomas in third, Josh Taylor in fourth and Don Cook in fifth.

In Hobby Stock action, Jason Price crossed the finish line first to score the victory. Bobby Piper came across in second, with Dylan Holmes in third, Justin Sapp in fourth, and Ricky Haugen in fifth.

Richie Stephens came home with the victory in the Bomber feature. Jason Price, Michael Davis, Steve Jenson, and Logan Smith rounded out the top five.

Dan Bennett was the winner in the KMSA Mini Stock feature. Tim Ladd came across in second, with Bo Minor in third, Mike Minor in fourth, and Jason Todd in fifth.

In Cruiser action, Jesse Stephens beat out Richie Stephens for the win. Steven Johnson finished in third, with Wesley Burke in fourth, and Buddy Piper in fifth.
