Andy Seuss found his way back to victory lane at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, NC Sunday night.
Seuss picked up his sixth NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour win at the .455-mile oval — but his first since Oct. 2011 — in dominating fashion in the Caraway 150.

“It was good to get this monkey off our back,” said the Hampstead, NH, driver. “We’ve had some bad luck and given some away (this season).”

On July 6 at Caraway, Seuss was charging through the field with the fastest car on the track before spinning after tangling with George Brunnhoelzl III for the race lead.

“We had the best car that night and should have won”, Seuss said. “It didn’t work out, but it provided us with motivation this time around.”

Seuss led twice for a race-high 125 laps and out-distanced runner-up Brunnhoelzl by .833 seconds to claim in his first Whelen Southern Modified Tour win in almost a year to the day. Seuss last visited victory lane on Sept. 9 of last year at Thompson (CN) Speedway. The win was the 13th of Seuss’ career in 77 career starts.

“The team never lost confidence, but you start questioning everything,” the driver of the Tammie Davis/Phoenix Pre-Owned Chevrolet said. “Am I holding the wheel wrong? Am I driving too hard or not hard enough?”

While the runner-up finish helped Brunnhoelzl stretch his lead over Kyle Ebersole in the championship standings to 20 with three races remaining, the defending and three-time Southern Modified title winner prefers to focus on wins at this stage of the game.

“The driver messed up in qualifying which put us behind the eight ball a little,” said Brunnhoelzl, who started sixth. “We had to use a little too much tire to get there and when we did; we just didn’t have enough and we just want to win races.”

John Smith scored a season-best finish of third and recorded his third straight top-five finish.

“We’ve really picked it up over the last two or three weeks,” Smith said. “The guys have really worked hard at getting the car tightened up. Early in the season I just got too loose and these things are hard to drive with the rear end picking up.”

Tim Brown and J.R. Bertuccio finished in fourth and fifth, respectively, with Ebersole, Danny Bohn, Gary Putnam, Brandon Ward and Jason Myers completing the top 10. Luke Fleming was the Sunoco Rookie of the Race with his 11th-place finish.

Earlier in the day, Seuss won his eighth career Coors Light Pole Award.

The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour returns to the track Saturday, Sept. 21 for the G-Oil 150 at Southern National Raceway Park in Kenly, NC.
