Three time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart suffered a broken leg in an accident in a sprint car event Monday night, an injury that will leave him sidelined for this weekend’s Sprint Cup race.

According to a release from Stewart-Haas Racing, Stewart sustained a broken right tibia and fibula in the crash, which occurred at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Stewart was immediately transported to an area hospital following the accident and underwent surgery. An update on the injury was expected later Tuesday.

Stewart-Haas Racing canceled a scheduled test for Atlanta Motor Speedway. A replacement driver for this weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Watkins Glen International Raceway in Watkins Glen, NY had not been determined as of press time.

While best known these days for his stock car racing career, Stewart is an accomplished open wheel racer. In 1995, he won all three of USAC’s major titles, the National Midget, Sprint, and Silver Crown championships. He has also won numerous open wheel races in various series.
