A dream came true this past Sunday night for Morrill, Maine’s, Travis Benjamin, as he scored the biggest victory of his career, winning the 40th Annual TD Bank 250 at the beautiful Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine. Benjamin grabbed the lead from Joey Doiron on lap 209 and raced to the victory by 1.167 seconds over Doiron.
The race started out a little sluggish as a couple of early cautions for minor spins dotted the event while pole sitter T.J. Brackett led the first 13 laps before Ben Rowe assumed the lead until lap 131 when Doiron raced to the front. Rowe faded towards the middle of the pack as his tires wore out.
Corey Bubar had upset on his mind as he grabbed the lead from Doiron for a couple of laps before Cassius Clark took to the point, passing him on lap 150. Clark’s lead was short lived as Benjamin grabbed the lead in traffic and looked like he was a sure winner until Doiron tracked him down and regained the lead on lap 194.
The pair swapped the lead until Benjamin made the move of a lifetime, splitting a pair of lapped cars, making it through a non-existent hole leaving Doiron in the dust. Durham, NC’s Jay Fogleman battled Doiron for second to the checkers but came up several car lengths short.
When the checkers flew it was Benjamin, followed by Doiron, Fogleman, Austin Theriault and Cassius Clark. Tim Brackett, Ben Rowe, Alan Tardiff, Daniel Hemric and Spencer Davis completed the top ten.
Six qualifying heats were held for the sixty-seven cars in attendance, and winners included T.J. Brackett, Bryan Kruczek, Ben Rowe, Cassius Clark, D.J. Shaw, and Corey Bubar. Consolation checkers flew for Glen Luce, Derek Kneeland and Trevor Sanborn and the last chance feature saw Ricky Rolfe capture the popular victory.
Sixty seven cars attempted to qualify for the TD Bank 250, and 41 made the field. The field included drivers from eight states and three provinces of Quebec. Seven southern teams made the trek north, with Jay Fogleman having the most success.
