Berry Captures Second Straight Hickory Late Model Win

It took an extra day due to the rain, but Josh Berry scored his second Late Model feature win in a row at Hickory Motor Speedway in Hickory, NC in an event weekend split between two days due to weather.

Matt Piercy started the feature on the pole with Austin McDaniel on the outside. As the green flag waved, Piercy would take the early lead while McDaniel and Devin Jones raced door to door for second place. By lap eight, McDaniel had regained the second position from Jones as Berry began to work his way to the point. On lap 12, a three way battle between Jeremy Sorel, Justin Crider and Reid Lanpher shaped up behind the leaders.

Meanwhile, up front, Piercy continued to lead while Berry would move into second and begin to pressure the leader. Piercy’s car would slip going into turn one, allowing Berry to slip up beside him to battle for the lead. After several laps of racing Berry would slip and return to second. Berry would make another bid for the lead and complete the pass on lap 42, setting up another battle between Piercy and McDaniel for second. McDaniel would take the second spot and Sorel would follow. At the checkered it would be Berry with the win, followed by McDaniel, Sorel, Piercy and Christian Calvo.

In other action, Adam Bever started on the pole for the K & P Construction 4-Cylinders feature. Beaver took the lead early with Matt Elledge and Nathaniel Kanupp battling behind him. On lap 16, Donnie Harmon would come to pit road with smoke from his car. On lap 21 Chase Pollard and Kanupp began to race door to door with Pollard getting the advantage on lap 22. At the checkered flag it would be Beaver with the win, followed by Elledge, Pollard, Kanupp and Eddie Gilbert.

Next up would be the Paramount KIA Limited Late Models with track points leader Shane Lee starting on the pole with Kyle Mansch on the outside. The remaining events, including the Late Model feature, would be carried over to Sunday due to rain.

The first race scheduled for Sunday was the Street Stock feature. Starting on the pole would be Marshall Sutton with Don Machutta joining him on the front row. Sutton would take the early lead going into one as the car of Machutta slowed with apparent problems. Meanwhile Kevin Eby and Mark Whitten would battle for several laps for second place with Eby finally taking the position. On lap 20, caution would wave for debris in turn three setting up a sprint to the finish. On the restart Sutton and Eby would battle and make contact with Eby taking the lead on lap 28. Sutton would work hard to regain the lead but at the line it was Eby holding on for the win. Sutton finished second, with Whitten in third, Donnie Harmon in fourth and Larry Mosher in fifth.

Jeremy Birch started on the pole for the Gold King Super Truck feature, with Doug Barnes starting second. Birch would take the lead and set the early pace. On lap four contact between Jason Smith and Whitney Lail would bring out the first caution when both trucks spin in turn four. Both trucks would be able to continue racing. Birch would continue to lead the race as Barnes and Lee Queen battled for the second position. Birch would take the checkered flag for the win, followed by Queen, Barnes, Spencer Boyd and Derrick Mathis.

Darren Dickinson started on the pole for the WrenchRags Renegades race. On lap two Charlie Neill would take the lead from Dickinson. Dickinson and Kenneth Roberts would create their own battle for second. On lap 13 Greg Austin spun going into turn two bringing out the caution flag. Neill would go on to take the victory, followed by Roberts in second, Dickinson in third, Austin in fourth, and Carroll McKinney in fifth.
