From a fire under the hood of a leader to the dominance of a veteran, Saturday night’s action had a little bit of everything for rain addled race fans who finally got to see a full night of racing at the legendary Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA.
Jody Knowles started out his night by setting fast time in a brand new Super Late Model. He ended the night in an obvious spot – victory lane.

Jody jumped out to the early lead, with Tony giving chase, while Shawn Chastain settled into third place. The first caution of the event flew on lap 12, when Kurt English slowed on the front stretch. On the restart, Jody would move back to the lead, with Tony in hot pursuit. Chastain would slide high off turn four, opening the door for Doug Stephens to slip past into third place. Two laps later, Johnny Chastain would some to a stop in turn two, drawing another caution.
On the final lap, Tony would give his cousin a run for the money, but came up short, as Jody Knowles scored the win. Tony Knowles finished in second, with Stephens in third, Jason Croft in fourth, and Dawsonville, GA’s Donald McIntosh in fifth.
The hottest action of the night – literally – was seen in the Limited Late Model feature. Allen Brewer jumped out to the early lead, and controlled most of the 20 lap feature. But Brewer began to see trouble near the halfway point, when his car began trailing smoke. One lap later, things got very hot when Brewer’s racer began trailing flames, with fire showing under the hood. Despite this, Brewer did not slow down, as he continued to charge around the 3/8 mile speedway. When the caution came out on lap 15, Brewer stopped on the front stretch, where fire personnel tended to his car. He charged back out, holding on to his lead. But just after the restart, Brewer’s car again erupted into flames. However, Brewer shoed he had no intention of slowing down, and held the lead coming to the white flag. Brewer’s car suddenly gave up the ghost coming off turn two, sending him around in his own oil and ending his night.
That moved Matt Dooley into the top spot for a one lap dash for the win. Jason Williams would take a run at the top spot, but couldn’t make it happen, as Matt Dooley led the most important lap – the last lap – to score the win. Williams held on for second, with Mike McConnell third, Scottie Pritchett in fourth, and Rucker Orr in fifth.
In Crate Late Models, Dustin Rogers jumped out the early lead, with Zach Pilcher in pursuit. The early laps would be interrupted twice by two cautions, including one for a four car shunt involving Steve Scoffield, Blake Smith, Maddie Crane, and Evan Bell. Rogers would continue to lead, while Mark Page moved around Pilcher for second place. Caution flew again on lap nine, when the cars of Jeff Derenhel and Ronnie Haynes tangled in turn two, leaving Haynes car on top of Derenhel’s. Haynes night was over, but Derenhel was able to continue. As the laps wound down, Page began to close on Rogers, but he can’t make a move on the leader, as Rogers scored the win. Page, Justin Shipley, Hunter Jones and Pilcher rounded out the top five.
In Econo Bombers, Shane Smith charged to the lead on lap eight, and powered away to score the victory. Rob Johnson finished in second, with Dan Meadows in third, David Burtz in fourth, and Gooch Spriggs in fifth.
In Super Bombers, birthday boy Richard Bagby moved out to the early lead, and would hold the top spot from wire-to-wire to win the 15 lap feature. Randall Powell finished in second, with Kirk Atkins in third, Daniel Brewer in fourth, and Andy Morris in fifth.
It was a similar situation for the Pony Stocks, and Ronnie Faucett moved to the early lead while the field stacked up behind him, all fighting for position. Faucett would motor away for the victory, with Shannon Etheridge in second, Jamie Cross in third, Jason Fravel in fourth, and Jeremy Milsaps in fifth.
It looked like Todd Lankster would not be denied in the Cruiser feature, despite a near setback. Lankster was charging through the field after leader George Wilson when Lankster made contact with Joe Trantham, sending him around on the backstretch. Race officials sent Trantham to the back for the contact. Lankster would move around Wilson for the lead on the restart, picking up the spot. A few laps later, Trantham’s night would come to an end with hard contact to the turn two wall. Trantham walked away uninjured. Up front, Lankster bombed away from the field, and was flagged the winner. However, he would fail post race tech, handing the win to Wilson. John Sexton finished in second, with Randy Ledford third, Tim Pittman fourth, and D.J. Ray in fifth.
