Mark Whitener made the most of an opportunity on a restart to jump out front and stay there in winning the Bubba Army Late Model feature at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, FL Saturday night.
Rich Pratt moved to the point for the opening stint that ended when Brandon Cameron spun in turn four. Whitener overtook Pratt at that point and pulled away, holding the lead through a couple of cautions. Whitener could not be stopped as he returned raced to victory lane. Pratt finished runner-up over Ivedent Lloyd, Jr., with Carter Stokes and Jeff Mathews rounded out the top 5.
In other action the Hobby Stocks opened the night up, with Brian Morgan taking his racer straight to the top spot. The opening half saw a couple of cautions for spins by Bubba Christian. Meanwhile, Donnie Ashford couldn’t muster up enough to get around Morgan.
Ashford brought out the final yellow with four laps to go after a spin in turn two. Morgan fended the pack off to score back-to-back wins, the first driver to do so in the division this season. Scotty Kay, Jr. finished in second, with Rodney Wright third, Dennis Williams fourth, and Trent Wilson fifth.
Jeff Matthews jumped out to the early lead for the UMP DirtCar Open-Wheel Modified feature, and would stay there the whole way. Larry Mott didn’t make it easy as leaders Mathews and Roger Crouse barreling down on him. Crouse was able to overtake Matthews, but it mattered not as Jeff Barrett brought the caution out. Matthews held Crouse off for the win to stay undefeated in Modified competition in 2013. Rich Pratt finished in third, with Chuck Gustafson, Jr. in fourth, and Scott Mooers in fifth.
Tim Grubaugh, Jr. led the opening laps in the E-Mods feature, but quickly gave way to Shane Taylor. Bud Chauncey overtook Taylor on lap five, and moments later, the slowing #82 was rear-ended by Shane Nichols who had nowhere to go. Both driver’s nights were over, but they were okay. Chauncey made it look easy over the next 15 laps and took a convincing win over Roy Crain. Daryl Larson finished third with Charlie Howard, Jr. and Mike Stalnaker rounding out the top five.
The 1-800-ASK GARY Thunder Stocks started off with Melvin Fockler holding the lead. Fockler held it through four cautions for various spins, but lost it to Jeffrey Smith in a three car battle on lap 13. Smith staved Brandon Elwood off over the final seven laps to win by half-a-car-length and grab his first career win. Daniel Keene grabbed third, with William Gillam in fourth, and John Florkowski in fifth.
Tyler Bryden led the first five laps of the Rent-N-Roll Gladiators event before giving way to Steve Johnson. On lap eight, Bryden broke the right rear, ending his night. Casey Feaster and Ray Hunter took the fight to Johnson before Feaster slowed with two laps to go. Johnson went on to score the win. Hunter finished second. Kody Fisher was flagged in third, but was disqualififed in post race tech for an illegal rear end. That moved Tom Sheehan to third. Stephen Frankland was flagged in fourth, but was disqualified in post race tech for not having a rev limiter. That moved Feaster to fourth and Tyler Bryden to fifth.
