Mobile International Speedway officials waited as long as possible but the persistent rain kept coming back, halting the festivities after four exciting heat and feature races on Saturday night at Alabama’s Fastest Half-Mile.
The inclement weather ultimately postponed the Pitts and Sons Demolition Derby but the Speedway has already scheduled a make-up date for June 22.
To reward those who stuck it out through the lengthy delay, fans are invited to come back two weeks from Saturday for a jam-packed evening headlined by the Southern Super Series Late Model tour and double features for the Island Motors II Bombers and Praytor Realty Super Stocks.
And once the dust settles on the five full-fledged feature events, the infield will be cleared to finally decide a winner in the Pitts and Sons Demolition Derby. And best of all, a ticket stub from Saturday night will act as a five-dollar-off coupon for the June 22 event.
Two dramatic features were completed on Saturday and featured two first-time 2013 winners in Donnie Hamrac and Lee “Red Dod” Reynolds.
Maeco Sportsman Spectacular
Due to one part could luck and another part gritty wheelmanship, Lee Reynolds captured a dramatic win in the Maeco Sportsman Spectacular on Saturday night in Mobile International Speedway.
In a fitting turn of events, the Maeco sponsored car won the Maeco sponsored event. It was the perfect recipe for Reynolds, who had been stricken with every sort of bad luck possible in 2013, including a mechanical failure the last time out on May 25.
Reynold’s luck finally turned around on Saturday, as he first inherited the lead on lap 18, when a dominant Steve Buttrick and Mark Barnhill tangled off of turn two.
Reynolds took the top spot and withheld a furious charge from a resurgent Barnhill who took second despite restarting in the back after his accident. Barnhill had the car late in the race but just couldn’t finish the job, despite shoving Reynolds on several occasions in the closing laps.
“It was a good race,” Reynolds said with a laugh in victory lane. “I was just hoping (Barnhill) wouldn’t take me out.”
The victory was especially meaningful for Reynolds as he collected a double winner’s prize for his first victory of the season. Barnhill gave it his best shot but wasn’t willing to rough-up Reynolds to do it.
“I gave him a bump to let him know I was there,” Barnhill said. “I did it to let him know that if he screwed up, I’ll be there to take it from him but he held on. We got messed up early but I feel fortunate to battle back and finish second.”
The race was perhaps decided on lap 17 when Buttrick, the leader, stalled on the restart causing Barnhill and others to stack up behind him. The mass of cars went four-wide into turn three but couldn’t make it out the other end, resulting in a multi-car accident.
Buttrick would pit and return to the track but would take the tail end of the field alongside Barnhill, leaving Reynolds, Randy Thompson, Chad Robinson and Brannon Fowler up front.

Donnie Hamrac ran about as close to a perfect race as you can run, leading all 35 laps en route to his first Alabama Pipe and Supply Modified feature victory in over a year.
Hamrac won the pole in time trials and luckily rolled a ‘no invert’ on the dice roll. As such, he started on the front row and never looked back, quickly establishing a three-car lead by the fifth lap. The team cars of Brandon Howell and Donald Crocker were left helpless and could only watch as Hamrac won the race by a margin of 6.5 seconds.
“We’ve been needing that like you can’t imagine, Hamrac said. It’s been almost a year since we won. We rolled a one and maybe things are starting to turn around with a night like this.”
