Going into the final lap of Friday night’s Late Model feature at Anderson Motor Speedway in Williamston, SC, it looked like the victory might slip through Kenneth Headen’s fingers. But contact between Randy Porter and Justin Sorrow sent Porter around, and opened the door for Headen to score his first AMS Late model victory.

Ralph Carnes was the fastest qualifier with a time of 15.147 seconds. The top seven were inverted to start the race which placed Trace Reeves and Headen on the front row. Headen took the lead at the start of the race and basically led every lap. But the truth of the race was a bit more ironed in controversy than a simple fact of leading every lap. By the middle of the race Headen had been run down by Porter. While Porter looked for a way past Headen and Headen looked for a way to keep Porter behind him, Sorrow worked his way to the third position and by lap forty began to close on the top two.

As Headen and Porter headed out of turn four prior to the white flag there was contact. Each driver maintained their respective positions but Porter had gained the inside position on Headen. As the two exited turn two Porter pulled to the front. By the time Headen had entered turn three Sorrow had also got under him. As Porter rounded turn four Sorrow made contact with him and Porter spun. This allowed Headen to drive past both Sorrow and Porter on the high side and to go on and receive the checkered flag. Sorrow finished second, with Carnes in third, Austin Aker in fourth, and Eric Stokes in fifth.

In other action, James Johnson scored the victory in the Super Renegade race. Sammy Staggs led every lap of the race and basically put a straightaway on the field before he received the checkered flag. Following the race it was determined that Stagg’s car was illegal and the victory was awarded to Johnson. Ted Somero, Nick Sears, Steve Kelly, and Rick Kelly rounded out the top five.

Shawn Campbell picked up the win in the Evergreen Renegade feature. Campbell led every lap of the race on his way to his first victory of the season. Tommy Stokes ran with Campbell throughout the race but failed to make a serious bid for the lead position during the race. Tommy Stokes finished second, with Chad Watt in third, Jack Robertson in fourth, and Blake Gregory in fifth.

Lance Jones claimed the win in the B-M Modified feature. Chuck Mitchell and Lance Jones battled side by side the first lap of the race with the two crossing the line almost dead even at the end of the lap. On lap two Mitchell grabbed the top spot and held it throughout the race and received the checkered flag. Lance Jones crossed the finish line second. Following the race Jones lodged a protest against Mitchell’s car but Mitchell failed to accept the protest and was therefore disqualified. The official victory was awarded to Jones. Austin Northcutt finished second. Alan Mitchell finished third. Shon Gibson finished fourth. Benny Gillespie finished fifth.

Riley Halverson topped the field for the win in the Legends feature. Halverson led every lap of the race and was never challenged for the top spot. The victory was the second in a row for Halverson. Riley Thornton finished second. Jacob Schneider finished third. Peyton Ryan finished fourth. Randy Gunton finished fifth.

Joey Kelly claimed the win in the Front Wheel Drive A-Main race. Kelly led every lap of the race as he put a straightaway advantage on the field on his way. Charlie Jack Hooper finished second. Chris Harvell finished third. Tommy Davis finished fourth. Bradley Williams finished fifth.

CJ Huitt picked up the victory in the Front Wheel Drive B-Main race. Robert Hall led the first four laps of the race before he relinquished the top spot to Huitt. Once out front Huitt pulled way from the field and picked up his first victory of the season. Camden Francis, Robert Hall, Chip Barnett, and Casey Burkett rounded out the top five.

Anderson Motor Speedway takes this weekend off, and will return to action on May 31 with the Late Models returning to the track. Visit andersonmotorspeedway.com for more information.
