With several weeks of postponements due to bad weather the fans and racers alike finally got the chance to play in the dirt at Boyd’s Speedway in Ringgold, GA, including Riley Hickman, who turned a three-wide pass into a victory in the Steel Head Late Model feature.

Nineteen cars were set to do battle for the feature win, with Georgia’s Johnny Cloer, Jr. bringing the field to the green.  A quick caution in turn 1 on the start would see the race brought to under a red flag condition, as many of the front competitors had their racing machines stacked one against another.  When the smoke and dust had been cleared Mike Tinker would take his heavily damaged car to the pits with the assistance of Benton Wrecker Service.

The field was realigned for the restart.  This time Johnny Cloer Jr would bring the field back to the green, but after being involved in the first start caution his car quickly began to fade back with front end steering issues.  Billy Henry would take the early lead, followed by Bobby Mayse.  Rick Hixson quickly pulled into second from his eighth place starting position.  As Henry and Hixson battled side by side for the lead lap after lap, Hickman quickly worked his way to the two way battle from his 10th starting position.

With Henry holding a fast line in the middle of the racing surface, Hixson continued to drive harder and lower each lap attempting to get past Henry.  As the two battled lap after lap in the same fashion Hickman sat back and watched from his third place running position.

As the field reached lap 10, Hickman decided the track was good enough and wide enough to make it a three wide battle for the lead.  Hickman drove deep into turn 3 on the high side and motored around both Henry and Hixson into the lead.  Once out front he began to show his dominance and quickly put space between himself and the rest of the field.  On lap 17 Hixson made the move and finally got around Henry for second place.  Meanwhile, up front, Hickman would capture his first victory of the new season, Hixson finished second, with Henry in third, T.J. Alford in fourth and Bobby Mayse in fifth.

In other action, the night started with the heavy iron of the B-Hobby Division.  The 15 lap event was slowed three times for cautions, the first coming on lap 5 when Josh Kilgore slowed on the front stretch.  Dallas Brooks found his way right where he had left off last year leading yet another race.  Brooks went on to capture his first victory of the year.  Following Brooks to the finish were Ronnie Kerr, David Vickers, Daniel Johnston, and Floyd Brooks.

The full field of Crate Late Models was up next.  A pair of veterans, Todd Morrow and Jason Welshan, would bring the field to the green.  A quick jump to the inside would give Morrow the early lead followed by Welshan.  Kasey Hall tried to get in the mix for the early lead as well.  A lap six caution for a spin by Tommy Smith in turn 4 would set the field tightly aligned for the second start.

On the restart, Welshan would drive down to the bottom of turn four in an attempt to get under Morrow, but Morrow had enough horses under the hood to slam the door on Welshan as they entered turn1.  The top three continued to fight as they began to move through slower traffic.  Caution would fly on lap 15, with Curtis Cline taking his racer to the pits ending any chance he had for a good finish.  Once back underway, Morrow would hold off all challenges to take the victory.  Welshan finished in second, with Kasey Hall in third, Kyle May in fourth, and Corey Hedgecock in fifth.

The A-Hobby division was up next.  Glen Seaton would line up alongside of Josh Walker to bring the field to the green.  Seaton would take the lead at the drop of the flag followed closely by Walker and B.J. Wilson.  The three would battle closely as they quickly pulled away from the rest of the field.  Josh Bingham would slow the field with a lap two caution when he took his ride to the infield.  Once back under green, Seaton would go on to hold off the challenges of Walker and Wilson for the win.  Jim Clark and John Clark,  III rounded out the top five.

The final feature of the evening would see Daniel Burnette hold off all challenges for the win in the FWD division.

Boyd’s Speedway returns to action on April 5, when the speedway will host the Advanced Title Pawn’s 40 lap $3000 to win Steel Headed Late Model feature along with the Jody Millard Pest Control sponsored $2000 Crate Late Model event.  The A-Hobby Division will also see a Priority Waste sponsored $500 to win event.  Chattanooga Valley Auto Parts will sponsor a $100 bonus to the fastest qualifier in both the Steel Headed Late Model and the Crate Late Model Events.  For more info, visit boydsspeedway.net.
