Georgia Racing Hall of Fame member Luther Carter passed away Friday afternoon at the age of 75.  The long time Peach State dirt and asphalt racer was known as one of the most talented and toughest racers in the southeast.

Carter started his career at Cherokee Motor Speedway near Cartersville, GA in 1969, and would record wins at that track, as well as the old Canton International Speedway in Canton, Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA and Rome Speedway in Rome, GA.

Over the next few years, Carter would record wins at Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron, GA, Jefco Speedway in Jefferson, GA (now known as Gresham Motorsports Park), Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, FL, as well as victories at Montgomery, AL and Opp, AL.

Carter won the Coca Cola 200 at Dixie Speedway in 1985, and won several asphalt events at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, GA, Gresham Motorsports Park (then Georgia International Speedway) in Jefferson, GA, and Lanier National Speedway in Braselton, GA.

Carter was also a multi-time competitor in the famed Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway.  He qualified for the event six times, with a best finish of fifth in 1976.  Carter placed 12th in 1974, 41st in 1975, 10th in 1977, 13th in 1978, and 33rd in 1980.

Carter retired in 1999.  In 2009, he was inducted into the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, and would remain active at GRHOF events over the years.

“I didn’t race for blood, but I did race for keeps,” said Carter of his racing career in a 2008 interview.  “I treated them like they treated me.”

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday morning at 11 am at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw, GA.  Burial will follow at Rolling Hills Memory Garden.
