Chad Robinson cemented his prolific 2012 season with a win in the Polaris Sportsman Challenge presented by Four Points Biloxi Beach Hotel on Saturday night, engaging in a bumper-to-bumper duel for 50 laps against championship leader Brannon Fowler at the penultimate night of the schedule at Irvington, AL’s Mobile International Speedway.

“We’ve worked an awful long time on this race,” Robinson said. “We were really excited about Lee Fields win but really, this is the main event, our biggest show of the year. And to come home first, and to do it against a guy like Brannon Fowler is just really special. I think he’s got this championship race wrapped up but winning tonight also gives us an outside shot at winning that too.”

Robinson first took the lead following a lap 13 restart, powering past Fowler, who had led up until that point. While Robinson couldn’t build a gap over Fowler and a closely-following Mark Barnhill he would lead the rest of the way and collect $2,000 for his victory – one of the largest sportsman prizes in the history of the division.

For all 50 laps you could throw a blanket over Fowler and Robinson as they battled for the lead. Fowler lead the first thirteen laps before Robinson passed him on the race’s only restart. The two battled the rest of the way with the only separation coming while working lap traffic.

Following the victory, Robinson put on a screeching burnout display, echoing the celebration he executed following his win in the Lee Fields Memorial Sportsman Challenge.

Barnhill, James Patrick and Bob Bryant completed the top-five. Additionally, Robinson shaved his championship deficit to 43 points with one race remaining – the title will go down to the final race on Oct. 27.

Island Motor II Bombers

Brandon Tipton survived a crash fest that was more demolition derby than stock car race at times, winning the Island Motor II Bombers feature on Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway.

Tipton wasn’t spared from the carnage. On one of the midway restarts the left side of Tipton’s car was destroyed in a 3 wide battle. “It’s hard to believe we finished the race. The quarter was pushed into the tire and my door was crushed against my seat,” offered Tipton.

Tipton would hold off the field on restart after restart and would eventually build a lead that was uncatchable. “Really pumped up about closing in on DRTs first Championship . We’ve got one more race and we need a solid night to take home the title.”

Jayme Corry returned after a one-week hiatus to finish second. Wesley Barnhill, Matt Jackson and Tracy Soles completed the top-five.

Praytor Realty Super Stock-Trucks

Okie Mason dominated the Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks season finale on Saturday night but had to share center stage with Steve “Chopper” Stagner, who with his third-place finish captured the 2012 season championship by 28 points over Jessie Reid.

Stagner celebrated his title by executing a textbook burnout on the frontstretch. The Mobile-native is the first champion of the combined cars versus trucks era and celebrated accordingly.

Mason was stout all afternoon but had to withstand late race charges from both championship contenders — Stagner and Jessie Reid.

The race was red flagged for roughly thirty minutes after a car lost an engine on the backstretch. The victim of the accident was Jason Johnson and his parts eventually littered the racing surface.

It was a wild run to the checkers but Stagner’s third-place finish was enough to clinch the title. Reid finished second followed by Stagner, Rocky Taylor and Chris Brownlee to complete the top-five.
