An over the top rope professional wrestling battle royal serves as the perfect backdrop and analogy for racing spanning five divisions this weekend at Mobile International Speedway in Mobile, AL.

Every short track across the country has one weekend that sticks out above the rest – a signature event. For Mobile International Speedway, that event is the Lee Fields Memorial, a showcase that drivers and fans alike have had circled on their calendars since the beginning of the year. A victory this weekend could be the difference between a failed and successful season.

Saturday will feature qualifying and heats for all local divisions with a $100 bonus set to be awarded to the fastest qualifiers. The heats will also determine starting spots for Sunday’s main events – the Lee Field Memorial feature races.

Sunday will feature races for all local divisions, qualifying for the Midwest Cooling Tower Pro Late Models and the 2012 running of the Lee Fields Memorial 150 – the crown jewel and championship of Southeast Pro Late Model racing.

Other divisions set to compete include the Island Motor II Bombers, Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman, Alabama Pipe and Supply Modifieds and Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks – the most action-packed weekend of racing ever seen at Mobile International Speedway.

Midwest Cooling Tower Pro Late Models

Mobile’s signature event has taken on an increased importance in recent years as drivers from all across the country have traveled to the Port City to participate for some of the most unique prizes in motorsports.

A Dave Millican-designed pro-wrestling championship belt – a tribute to former track owner and professional wrestling pioneer, Lee Fields will go to the winner. Millican is the same championship designer whose work has been featured in both the WWE and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling promotions.

Fields once promoted a regional heavyweight championship bout at Ladd-Peebles Stadium that drew over 40,000 fans, proving his flair for the dramatic and spectacular – traits that have been passed down to the Pro Late Model event named in his honor.

Current track promoter Rick Crawford got the idea for the unique trophy when he attended a wrestling reunion with Ida Fields and saw “Cowboy” Bob Kelly with an NWA Gulf Coast championship belt.

Lastly, the winner will receive the pride and prestige of winning one of the top pro late model races in the country. That’s a fairly underappreciated prize until you consider winning in a field against the likes of Mike Garvey, Augie Grill, Bryce Dulabhan, Josh Bragg and Bubba Pollard – a snapshot of the event’s early favorites.

Pollard is the three-time and defending winner of the event, having held off DJ VanderLey in last year’s event. He’s gunning for four in a row and his second-consecutive championship belt. His first belt is one of the most beloved prizes in his trophy case and winning another one was one of his top priorities at the beginning of the season.

Last season’s win had a lot more meaning behind it because of the championship belt,” Pollard said. “The belt is such a great way to honor Mr. Lee Fields because it incorporated his other interests off the track. It’s cool to have a belt because it so unique.”

Bryce Dulabhan enters the Memorial as the Pro Late Model championship leader but has not yet won a race. He hopes that he’s saved his best for the Memorial and breaks through in a big way on Sunday afternoon.

Dulabhan currently leads Josh Bragg by four points in the championship with Elliott Massey and John Thompson 87 and 92 points out of the lead respectively. These are the contenders Pollard expects to deal with on Sunday afternoon.

“The competition is definitely tough at the bigger Pro Late Model races,” Pollard says. “There is always great competition in the South. Each year, the competition in the pro division seems to be getting tougher. I think the belt will bring the competition level up because it is something so different. A lot of people want to win something unique like the belt. And I want another one.”

Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman

Brannon Fowler leads the championship standings with 698 points and has maintained the top spot since the second week of the season.

He has two wins but hasn’t visited victory lane since March, 24th. He’s going to need a few more to hold off surging teammates James Patrick and Chad Robinson. Both have climbed within 100 points of Fowler’s lead, remarkable considering his once-massive advantage. Fowler is fully aware of the trend and is preparing a stronghold around the Lee Fields Memorial.

Robinson leads all sportsman drivers with five wins, including four in a row late in the spring. His latest win came on Aug. 4 and is hoping to start a new streak in the biggest race of the season. Patrick is surging as well, coming within just a few tenths of a second of defeating Robinson last time out. A breakthrough victory could immediately get him to within championship contention as well.

Patrick is 52 points behind Fowler with Robinson 81 points out.

Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks

Steve “Chopper” Stagner became the first super truck driver to win in the combined cars versus trucks series when he won the Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks feature on Apr. 7. Now he’s looking to double-up on history, winning the first such championship in division history, entering Saturday night with a 32-point lead over Jessie Reid.

But Reid and third-place Okie Mason (-84 points) are preparing their final stand, with a hard-charging JayJay Day and Todd Pitts actually outperforming the championship contenders over the last few weekends. It’s arguably the most competitive division on a week-to-week basis.

Island Motor II Bombers

Jerry Goff Jr. became the latest first-time winner at Mobile International Speedway on Aug. 4 when he capitalized on several mid-race accidents and terminal failures to become the division’s fourth different winner this season.

Championship contenders Brandon Tipton and Jayme Corry both finished at the bottom of the order, maintaining Tipton’s 39 point lead. Corry leads the division with five wins and will need to continue winning to bridge the gap. That won’t be an easy task with Goff hitting his stride.

The heat races will also provide an opportunity for new faces to compete for the chance to go to victory lane, providing some of the most action-packed moments of the season.

Alabama Pipe and Supply Modifieds

The championship battle between Donald Crocker and Donnie Hamrac will reach a feature pitch this weekend as Crocker’s lead has dropped to 27 points over Hamrac. This season will ultimately be remembered for their intense but respectful rivalry.

While these two drivers enter as the favorites, track record holder Gerald Wilkerson and Brandon Howell have had roughly a month to maximize their set-ups. The winds of change could start with this weekend’s modified races at Mobile International Speedway.
