Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL is hosting a spectacular Back to School Bash this Saturday night with a demolition derby, 50-lap modified feature, motorcycles, sportsman and bombers. It’s the most action-packed and diverse show of the year, and one you can’t afford to miss.

Saturday night is also ride along night at “The Fastest Fun Around.” Kids will have the opportunity to ride along with their favorite Island Motor II Bomber, Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman or demolition derby driver or ride in the pace car with NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Rick Crawford.

Pitts and Son Towing Demolition Derby

In the world of southern motorsports, a demolition derby is as traditional as apple pies and gravy fries. That tradition will continue on Saturday night in the Pitts and Sons Towing Demolition Derby at Mobile International Speedway. It’s a bumper-car battle royale with the pit area being transformed into a bullring for 20-plus cars to slam it out until only one remains standing.

Alabama Pipe and Supply Modifieds

Two rain outs have postponed Saturday’s 50-lap modified main event and as a result, the anticipation has reached a boiling point. This is especially true for top prospect Randy Anderson.

In the hierarchy of southern racing dynasties, the Andersons of Willwood, FL is as prestigious as it gets. That’s a lot to live up to for third generation Randy — a challenge he accepts with pride and honor.

Grandfather Dick Anderson is considered a Florida racing legend and pioneer, while father Wayne is a two-time All-Pro Series Champion and the 2001 Snowball Derby winner. Wayne has also competed in the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Camping World Truck divisions, notching two top-10s at the highest level. Randy hopes to be right behind them.

“It’s real important that I hold up to their names,” Randy said. “There’s a standard of quality involved with my dad and grandfather and I want to represent them to the best of my ability.”

Typically a Florida late model driver, Randy is the 2010 FAST Series Rookie of the Year. To gain more exposure, Randy has started racing out of state and expanding to super modifieds for team owner Kevin Terry. Saturday night, and Mobile International Speedway, will see the promising young rookie make his modified debut, and he’s sure to be one of the favorites.

“I’ve only seen Mobile once,” Randy admitted. “I was 12 and dad raced there in the All-Pro Series. It reminds me a lot of New Smyrna Speedway (a half-mile 15 minutes north of Daytona) and I think the similarities will work to our benefit. The car is fast and I can’t wait to see the competition.”

Wayne Anderson will also be in attendance on Saturday night, not as a driver, but as a crew chief. Wayne will look to get a handle on the set-up for Mobile because he expects he and his son to return for a few super late model races over the next few years. In fact, don’t be surprised to see the team draw up plans for September’s  SUPERSEAL 150 super late model race.

And just like Randy Anderson’s chances on Saturday, don’t be surprised if they win it.

Island Motor II Bombers

The Island Motor II Bomber championship has come down to Day Racing teammates Brandon Tipton and Jayme Corry. Third-place Rusty Powell Sr. has an outside shot but has lost points on the two every week since his breakthrough victory in June.

The Day teammates have taken two very different paths to the championship. Corry leads the division in wins (five), but trails Tipton by 49 points. Tipton has a stronghold on the championship based on a steady combination of poles, feature wins, and consistency.

He doesn’t, however, have momentum. That belongs to Corry, who is the most recent winner at the Speedway. Two in a row could get him back on top of the standings, and a chance to be best of the bombers.

Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman

Much like the bombers, the Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman championship has become a two car affair with Brannon Fowler leading James Patrick by 62 points.

Chad Robinson sits in third, 96 points out of first place, an incredible run considering that Robinson missed the first two races of the season. Robinson won four races in a row in the late sprint but is winless in his last three feature races. Wins will have to come back if Robinson expects to make a surprise run at the division championship.

Hall’s Motorsports Motorcycles

Track records are expected to fall again as the Halls Motorsports Motorcycles make their much-anticipated return to Mobile International Speedway on Saturday night.

Rob McLendon, a third generation Motorcycle racer, set the current record by recording a 21.129 on April 15. The previous record was set by McLendon last August. If McClendon, nicknamed “Robbie Bobby”, a take off from his favorite movie Talladega Nights, can break the record again in qualifying we can expect to see the “Magic Man” in the feature.

McLendon will have his hands full with an increasing numbers of bikes coming to take on the smooth high banked asphalt of Mobile.

Grandstands open at 5 PM on Saturday.  Visit www.mobilespeedway.net for more info.
