In a tale of two races, Augie Grill experienced both ends of the racing spectrum. In race No. 1 of the Wild Card Twin 55s, Grill suffered a mechanical failure on the rear end of his car and finished dead last. As fate would have it, David Jones’ car was destroyed early in the race, and he donated his rear end to Grill, who went last-to-first in winning the second 55-lap feature and his first of 2011 at Mobile International Speedway.
Hunter Robbins also picked up his first win of the season in the first Wild Card Twin. Darin Matthews, Mark Barnhill, and Jayme Corry also picked-up wins in the action-packed local divisions, with the drivers brimming with anticipation after two consecutive rainouts.

Grill started dead last but quickly made his way to second by virtue of clean tires. His original set was virtually untouched in the first race, and the difference was noticeable. Grill was in second place by lap 6, and captured the lead from Mason Massey on lap 14. Massey’s Bill Elliott Racing No. 9 was stout on cool tires and short runs, but faltered over the long green flag session in Saturday’s main event. He finished fourth.
Grill passed Massey without much of a fight but was forced to pass on the outside. The Georgia-native wasn’t going to give the position away, a fact not lost on Grill.
“Mason was glued to the bottom and he gave me a good clean fight,” Grill said. “I’ve been trying to get this monkey off my back for a few months now. We had a tough break in the first race and David [Jones] gave us a hand with his rear end, and I can’t thank him enough. From there it was just about protecting the tires for a late restart.”
Once Grill moved past Massey, the battle was for second. Massey’s tires eventually fell off and Mike Garvey captured second on lap 36. Both Bryce Dulabhan and Hunter Robbins picked him off for second and third, and that would complete the podium.
The Twin 55s produced great racing on the track and a new points leaders in Bryce Dulabhan. He leads Josh Bragg by four points leading into September’s Lee Fields Memorial 150.

Hunter Robbins passed Spencer Davis on lap 35 and never looked back to win his first race of the season at Alabama’s Fastest Half-Mile.
The first Twin 55 opened the program and saw the six fastest qualifiers using a wild card draw to resort the starting lineup. The draw jumbled the grid and produced some of the best side-by-side racing from any track in any discipline.
Grill’s mechanical failure further tossed the race into doubt, eliminating the potential favorite, and further jumbled the running order. Robbins, Davis, and Logan Boyette spent a majority of the race nose-to-tail and in lap traffic and traded the lead amongst themselves from lap 25-to-35.
Ultimately, it was Ronnie Sanders’ No. 18, piloted by Robbins, which was able to best navigate through traffic and eventually pace the competition. Mike Garvey and Mason Massey completed the podium.
Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks
Jessie Reid ultimately had one too many obstacles to overcome, finishing second to Darin Matthews in Saturday night’s Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks feature at Mobile International Speedway. The win is Matthew’s second of the season and second in a row.
The victory did not come without pressure as Reid hounded Matthew’s back bumper throughout the final five laps. Reid was involved in the race’s major accident on lap 2 and later had to pit to correct a tire rub.
Reid started at the back of the field no less than four times and made his way to the front every time. He passed more cars and trucks than any other competitor in the feature race, but couldn’t pass the one that mattered most. Matthews hugged the bottom throughout the end of the race, and despite Reid’s best efforts on the outside, would lead the rest of the way.
Reid’s valiant effort did move him to second in the standings, 32 points behind Steve ‘Chopper’ Stagner, who finished third in Saturday’s race. Ricky Taylor and Jay Jay Day completed the top-five.
The race’s major storyline developed on lap 12 when Day and Todd Pitts made contact on the exit of turn 2. After spinning in the infield grass, Day appeared to make second contact with Pitts and was stopped on the front stretch. Day made his displeasure known to track officials and was involved in a confrontation with Pitts in the infield.
Both drivers were separated without further incident.
Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman
Mark Barnhill joined the growing list of first-time winners in the Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman division on Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway. He joined James Patrick, Lee Reynolds, Chad Robinson, Brannon Fowler, and Michael Moody as a 2012 race winner.
Barnhill started on the front row alongside Michael Moody, but it was the former that led a side-by-side dash to complete the first lap. Barnhill worked under Moody at the entrance to turn 3 and Reynolds followed him up the track. Moody appeared to have completely missed his set-up and finished dead last.
Reynolds spent the next 15 laps trying to under Barnhill but the latter closed the door every time. “Red Dog” got his best look under Barnhill on lap 10 when the No. 3 drifted up turn 4, but Barnhill pulled the No. 32 down the backstretch and never looked back.

Robinson, Patrick, and Bryant completed the top-five.
Island Motor II Bombers
Jayme Corry held off BJ Leytham on several lap 13 restarts to win the Island Motor II Bombers feature on Saturday night. The win is his fifth of the season, leading all drivers in the division.
BJ Leytham led for a majority of the race, having started on the pole, and on during several late restarts against Corry and Brandon Day. Leytham held is on each time before getting caught on a restart with 12 laps to go. Leytham recovered to finish second. Jerry Goff Jr. completed the podium.
“I was getting tired of those restarts,” Corry admitted. “I’m not that great at them but we held on and came home with a win.”
Championship leader Brandon Tipton finished fourth and now leads the standings by 49 points over his Day Racing teammate (Corry).
