The road to the Lee Fields Memorial 150 begins Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL, as the best pro late model drivers in the Southeast gear up for 110 laps in the WKRG TV 5 Twin 55 Pro Late Model Spectacular.

While the Lee Fields Memorial is still nearly two months away (Sept. 8-9), Elliott Massey is looking for a breakthrough weekend that could setup the biggest win of his career and a shot at Mobile’s Heavyweight Championship Belt..

“Saturday night’s races are the best and last chance we’ll have before the Lee Fields Memorial,” Massey said. “We want to build momentum heading into the Lee Fields and Saturday provides us a lot of opportunities.”

Massey will have to go through DJ VanderLey, Bryce Dulabhan, Mike Garvey, John Thompson, championship leader Josh Bragg and a host of others if he hopes to take one of the WKRG TV 5 Twin 55s this weekend. Bragg leads the standings by nine points over Dulabhan and 55 over third-place John Thompson. Massey sits in fourth, 57 points out of the lead.

“The championship battle has been great,” Massey said. “With only a couple races left in the season, it’s going to be hard to overcome those top two guys unless they have some trouble and we can capitalize. Competing with some of these guys is like David vs. Goliath with our lack of resources. A great run is almost like a victory, but we’re going after the real thing on Saturday night.” Saturday night’s twin races will offer 2 sets of points and could be a game changer in determining a Champion.

Massey feels as though he hasn’t reached his potential. He claims to have a long-run car and with the return of heat racing and the rash of cautions that have plagued the 2012 season, Massey continues to miss the set-up required for short runs, a format that he won’t have to deal with on Saturday and two 55-lap features.

“This season has been a roller coaster for us with the return of old school racing,” Massey said. “We won earlier this year, and that helped our pride more than anything else. It showed that we can get the job done, we just have to execute and catch some breaks.”

Massey has been competing in the Midwest Cooling Tower Pro Late Model division since 2007 and is finally getting recognized as one of the track’s go-to veterans. As such, he’s ready to take the steps necessary to become one of the more-elite drivers at the Speedway, and winning one of Saturday’s two features would go a long way in establishing that fact.

The format for the WKRG TV 5 Twin 55s:

The top 8 qualifiers will draw giant playing cards for their starting positions. An Ace starts first and all others by the number on their card. The Midwest Cooling Tower Pro Late Models will open the show with 55 green flag laps followed by features for the Island Motor II Bombers, Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman and the Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks. The late model drivers will then line up their cars one more time and finish the night with a second 55-lap segment to determine a winner.

The first 8 finishers from the first race (only cars on the lead lap will be eligible) will draw from the oversized deck again for their starting spot in the second race.

“The fans love the new format and we’ve got some of the most loyal fans in sports.” Massey said. “The wild card draw adds a new level of excitement versus the dice roll because now no one knows the exact starting order until the final card is drawn.”

Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman

Brannon Fowler leads the most competitive season of Sportsman racing in recent memory as Fowler, James Patrick, Chad Robinson, Randy Thompson and Lee Reynolds have each won races in 2012. While several drivers have won, it’s Fowler who has been the most consistent, leading the championship by 70 points over Patrick.

Reynolds has the most momentum entering this weekend, as “Red Dog” is coming off his first victory of the season. The victory was the closest finish of the season, per any division, and the driver of the No. 32 is hoping for a repeat performance on Saturday.

Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks

The Praytor Realty Super Stock-Trucks division has really heated up with the summer, with four different winners in four different feature races to start 2012.

Spencer Davis joined Chopper Stagner, Okie Mason, and Jessie Reid on June 23 with Jay Jay Day and Todd Pitts amongst the contenders hoping to win their first features of the season this Saturday night.

Stagner, the first super truck driver to win a feature in the combined cars versus trucks series at Mobile, also leads the championship standings by 25 points over Mason. Jessie Reid is only a short 34 points out, with Day and Pitts looking for wins to get back to championship form.

Island Motor II Bombers

Day Racing teammates Brandon Tipton and Jayme Corry are locked in the closest championship battle currently contested at Alabama ‘s fastest Half-mile.

Both drivers have won four times, but Tipton leads the standings by 54 points by virtue of consistency and his nine pole positions in qualifying. Roughly halfway through the season, Tipton has his eyes firmly set on the prize.

“I think it’s very important that we close out this championship,” Tipton said. “We’ve faced a lot of ups and downs through the years and this championship will mean a lot.”

Corry never expected to compete for a championship this early in his career. And to be in the championship mix with his teammate is just an added bonus. There’s a lot of respect and admiration between the two.

“We have a pretty fair relationship,” Corry said of his teammate. “There’s the occasional difference but we’re family on Saturdays. We’ve grown up together and to be able to race for this championship is just great.”

Rusty Powell Sr. is the only other driver to have scored a feature victory in the division this year, but the “Bomber King” has spent a majority of the season running third behind Tipton and Corry. Powell sees a lot of talent and promise sitting in the No. 38 and 98 cars.

“Jayme and Brandon are great wheelmen,” Powell conceded. “DRT has always had fast cars and great drivers and I really enjoy racing with them. With that said, if DRT slips-up I’ll be right there to take advantage.”
