Coby Makes Late-Race Pass For Stafford NWMT Win

Doug Coby slipped past Bobby Santos eight laps from the finish to win the TSI Harley-Davidson 125 at Stafford Motor Speedway at Stafford, CN on Friday to become the driver with more than one win this season.

Coby’s first win came in the tour’s first visit to Stafford last month.

For the Milford, Conn., driver – who was making his 118th start – it marked his fourth career win and his third victory on Stafford’s half-mile oval.

But there were very little similarities between Coby’s dominating win last month and his Friday night triumph, starting with entirely different chassis and engines.

“I tell you this thing – I call it the ‘show car’ because I tell them I never want to race it, I want it to be the show car and just want to keep it nice and shiny and run the other one every time. We all make fun of it and say the show car can stay at home, but the show car put on a show tonight.

“What can I say? This thing was freaking awesome.”

Santos held on for second, followed by Ron Silk, Todd Szegedy and Rowan Pennink.

Coby’s No. 52 Reynolds Auto Wrecking/Furnace & Duct Chevrolet started fifth but had to pit on lap 27 under caution for a flat right front tire. He charged back and chased down Santos, who had won the Coors Light Pole Award earlier in the day and led the race from the drop of the green. Coby closed in on the leader with 10 laps to go and on his second attempt drove underneath Santos for the lead.

“I was nervous,” said Coby. “I didn’t think we’d get (Santos). I thought the fastest car was going to finish third or fourth. But, I had to drive the hell out of it and I’m really happy to be here.”

Coby’s finish overshadowed a strong run by Santos, who had held off previous challenges from Ryan Preece, Silk and Ted Chrisopher. The 2010 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion is running on a limited basis for car owner Sully Tinio.

Whenever the car’s prepared enough and guys can get the time to go, we’re going to race.

“I was taking care of my car the whole race,” Santos said. “I wasn’t really pushing it as hard as I had to until I got a couple of challenges there. We were a little free getting in the turns, pretty much the whole race, but it wasn’t a big deal.

“Doug was good. He was good at the end. He beat us.”

For Silk, it came down to not being able to finish the pass underneath Santos when he had the opportunity.

“My car was good, but it just wasn’t good enough where I could get off the corner.” Silk said. “I could get a bumper, get a wheel up under Bobby, but I just couldn’t get off the previous corner good enough to get half a car established under him. He was protecting the lead – with 20 to go, I would have done the same thing he did.”

Coby went under Silk for second on lap 113 before setting his sights on Santos.

Keith Rocco was the top Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate in sixth, followed by Christopher, Woody Pitkat, Jimmy Blewett and Justin Bonsignore.

Coby previously won the Spring Sizzler at Stafford in 2006 and earlier this year. The earlier win provided Coby a locked-in spot to the UNOH Battle of the Beach next February at Daytona International Speedway — an honor reserved for race winners. With Friday night’s win, Coby took the points lead over defending champion Silk by five points after four events.
