Two track speed records were shattered in the Open-Wheel Only Spectacular, Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL.
The evening got off to a fantastic start when six Must See Xtreme Sprint Cars surpassed Kevin Swindell’s track record of 14.487 seconds – set in 2005. Todd Fayard, from nearby Saucier, MS, collected a $500 bonus when he emerged as the new track record holder with a lap of 13.919 seconds. Fayard was the only driver to crack the 13 second barrier.
Motorcyclist Robbie McClendon broke his own record of 21.330 – set in August, by posting a 21.129 during qualifying on Saturday. This serves as a reminder as to why fans should get to the track as soon as possible – the action starts long before the drop of the first green flag.
Must See Xtreme Sprint Car Series
Brian Olson took advantage of a front row starting position on his birthday to claim his first career Must See Xtreme Racing Sprint Car Series feature victory Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway. Olson piloted the Davey Hamilton Racing TRUFUEL entry into victory lane and collected the championship points lead for his efforts.
The laps ticked by at a blistering fast pace as Olson withstood a late race charge by Jason Cox. Cox appeared to have taken the lead from Olson on lap 20 but a caution had occurred just before the pass was completed. The break fell Olson’s way and he never looked back.
“With about ten laps to go, I was getting bottled up in lapped traffic and Jason got by me,” Olson said. “I caught a lucky break with the caution and got the lead back. After that I knew he was there and had to step it up – that’s what I did and it paid off.
“This series is getting bigger and bigger and there are some really good drivers in it.”
The three seven-lap heat races were won by Tim Cox, Jim Sheets, and Mickey Kempgens.
Alabama Pipe and Supply Modifieds
Donald Crocker and Donnie Hamrac resumed their 2012 rivalry on Saturday night with Crocker picking up the win in the Alabama Pipe and Supply Modifieds feature race on Saturday night at Alabama’s Fastest Half-Mile.
Hamrac started in second and quickly took the lead before one lap was completed. But it was Crocker who was the event’s biggest mover. Crocker, a Citronelle-native, started in sixth due to a field invert but was just behind Hamrac by the race’s third lap.
Crocker was all over Hamrac’s bumper, eventually overtaking Hamrac off turn four, of the third lap. Crocker pulled away and never looked back, winning on the merits of getting through lap traffic better than his competition.
“It’s scary lapping cars at our closing speed,” Crocker said. “I just want to thank the Braggs for a fast car and all of our sponsors. We had a fast hot rod and it’s great to win at Mobile.”
Crocker and Chris Cotto won heat races in the modifieds division with Crocker catching some heat for making contact with Hamrac. Hamrac was sent over the turn 1 hill and would not finish the heat race.

“I reckon his spotter wasn’t on his buttons,” Crocker said. “It was just a heat race so I definitely didn’t want to turn him and it wasn’t intentional. I don’t want to wreck anyone out here.”
Halls Motorsports Motorcycles
Robbie McClendon doubled-up Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway, sweeping both heat and feature races in the fastest Motorcycle races in track history.
McClendon led wire-to-wire in the same night where he also shattered his own track record in qualifying.
“We had a good time and a fun race thanks to Halls Motorsports. Traffic was heavy at times and I guess we just picked the right spots,” McClendon said.
Mobile International Speedway will be back in action on Apr. 21 for heat and feature races for the Midwest Cooling Tower Pro-Late Models, Island Motors II Bombers, Bob’s Speed Shop Sportsman and Praytor Realty Super Stocks-Trucks.
