It’s one of the most anticipated weekends on the schedule tonight (Saturday night), as Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, AL hosts Open-Wheel Only Saturday, highlighted by the Must See Xtreme Sprint Car Series. Saturday will also see the return of the Alabama Pipe and Supply Modifieds and Halls Motorsports Motorcycle Division.

The Xtreme Sprint Car Series is considered one the most intense forms of racing on the planet, featuring some of the fastest sprint cars and most-daring drivers from all over the country. The Michigan-based sprint car series boasts some of the greatest names in open-wheel racing and will attempt to set a new track record Saturday night at Alabama’s Fastest Half-Mile.

Winged sprints will easily surpass 100 mph on Saturday with speeds reaching up to 130 mph on the backstretch. The Xtreme Sprint Cars are expected to run up to three seconds faster than the fastest Mobile late models.

Mobile’s current speed record stands at 14.487 seconds (124.249 mph) and was set by Kevin Swindell in a winged sprint in October of 2005. Over 25 sprints are expected to qualify for Saturday’s show, the second race on the Must See Racing calendar.

Saucier, Mississippi’s Todd Fayard considers Mobile his home track. And at 40-years old, he also has the most sprint car experience at the Speedway, competing in Tampa Bay Area Racing Association (TBARA) events at Mobile in previous seasons.

He believes his experience will play a key factor in this Saturday’s Royal Oak Southern Shoot Out.

“We’re looking forward to coming back to our home track,” Fayard said. “We like these half-mile speedways as they suit my driving style and the racing is always exciting.”

Troy DeCaire won two features in 2011 en route to winning his second-consecutive Xtreme Sprint Car Championship. He’s looking to make it three in a row, starting with a strong showing this weekend at Mobile.

Track officials anticipate an even better show on Saturday when the division returns to action at the famed Alabama Speedway.

Modified racing also signals the return of the most-decorated track champion in Mobile history as Gerald Wilkerson returns to compete for a record 12th MIS championship. Wilkerson finished third behind Hamrac and Crocker on Mar. 24 and has waited three weeks to get another shot at victory lane.

Halls Motorsports Motorcycles

Track records are expected to fall as the Halls Motorsports Motorcycles make their much-anticipated return to Mobile International Speedway on Saturday night.

Robert McLendon set the current record by recording a 21.330 on August 6. Over 20 road and oval motorcycle aces will take to the high banks of Mobile International Speedway this Saturday in an attempt to set new track records and win the first Motorcycle feature of the season.
