‘Hog Rocket’ Soars To Victory At Hartwell Speedway

After the early closure and near foreclosure of Hartwell Speedway in Hartwell, GA in 2010, to say it came back from the brink of disaster in to 2011 would be an understatement.  And while the 2011 was a dream season for Hartwell Speedway, for some of its competitors like “Hog Rocket” Bubba Russell it was a nightmare.

Russell, who is a multi-time points champion of Hartwell Speedway, graduated up from Limited Late Model to Super Late Model in 2011, and began traveling to some of the larger venues out of state. It was during his travels to Gaffney, South Carolina’s, Cherokee Speedway he sustained a devastating shoulder injury that sidelined him for over 9 months.

Since that time Russell has been chomping at the bit for his opportunity to get back into the driver’s seat and redeem his rightful spot at the top of the leader’s board, and that is just what he did.

After nine months of watching everyone else enjoy the spot light in the winner’s circle, Russell decided he was not going to be denied any longer, capturing the pole position in his famed “Hog Rocket” racer and leading from flag to flag to score the Limited Late Model feature Saturday night.

Last week’s winner, Brandon “Cornbread” Haley, did everything he could to run down the #32 of Russell, but would find challenges of his own for second from last year’s points champion Jimmy Johnson. For several laps Haley and Johnson would battle side by side for second place, allowing “Hog Rocket” to soar into victory lane unchallenged.

Haley held on for second over Johnson, with Wesley English in fourth, and Johnny Tucker in fifth.

In other action, Frankie Beard topped the field to score the victory in the Crate Late Model feature.  Travis Knight came home second, with Grand Jordan running third, Adam Smith in fourth, and Colby Cannon in fifth.

In Modified Street action, Wormy Gaddis beat out Rusty Jordan to score the win.  Mark Chancey would follow the lead duo to the finish line for third, with Daniel Snow in fourth, and Jennifer Everett in fifth.

John Teasley came across the finish line first to pick up the Stock V8 feature.  Keith Ross finished second, with Ricky Chamberlain in third, Joseph Teasley in fourth, and Colby Thornton in fifth.

Mitchell Godfrey was flagged as the winner in the Stock Four feature, with Ashley Poole, Nathan Bray, Dustin Bales, and Jeffery Lord rounding out the top five.  However, there is a pending protest that could change the outcome.  Check back for further updates.

Bryce Alewine scored the win in the Young Guns feature, beating out Drew Collins for the victory.  Daniel Ivester finished third, followed by Travis Hubbard in fourth, and Bradley Lambert in fifth.

In the Up Front feature, Steven Powell came home with the top spot, with Joel Powell, Sr. in second, and Joel Powell, Jr. in third.  Keith Hix ran fourth, with James Campbell in fifth.
